Matthews’ defensive performance against Hosanna Christian’s 6-4 post Sarah Hinderer proved pivotal as fifth-ranked Butte Falls rallied for a 45-33 home victory. Butte Falls’ ninth straight league victory moved the Loggers (17-5, 11-1 Sky A) into a first-place tie with Hosanna. The Loggers only league loss came on a forfeit to the Lions in a game Butte Falls won 38-35 earlier this season. Butte Falls had to forfeit the victory because of playing a player in too many combined quarters between varsity and JV. Butte Falls was trailing and the German foreign exchange student Hinderer had scored 10 points near the end of the second quarter when Matthews came off the bench in her first extended action since hurting her knee against Paisley Jan. 18. Hinderer was limited to one field goal the remainder of the game, primarily guarded by Matthews. "Her (Matthews) defense kept their big girl away from the basket," Butte Falls coach B.J. Rodgers said. "Matthews’ presence on offense made them collapse in the middle and left our shooters open on the outside." The Loggers trailed 21-18 at halftime before changing the momentum in the third quarter by outscoring the Lions 18-4. Senior Amanda Hamilton was the catalyst for the turnaround, scoring 12 of her game-high 21 points in the period. "Hamilton went crazy in the third quarter," said Rodgers. "They had to stay inside on Sarah (Matthews) and Amanda really moved around to get the ball." Junior point guard Brianna Smeltz also came through for the Loggers. Smeltz’s stats —six points, four assists and four steals — did not really tell the story. "The Smeltz girl was all over the place," said Rodgers. "She was our floor general. She made everything work for us." Butte Falls outrebounded Hosanna, 28-15, with Cassy Bartel leading the Loggers with nine boards. HOSANNA (33) — Morehouse 0, Chronister 0, Smith 0, Kat. PROSPECT 48, BRIGHTON ACADEMY 27 — At Prospect, junior post Candice Govenor scored eight of Prospect’s first 12 points as the Cougars (10-11, 3-7 Sky A) ended a seven-game losing streak. Prospect’s press forced some early turnovers and helped the Cougars go out to a 17-2 first-quarter lead. Cougar senior guard Lacey Tallman led all scorers with 23 points. Tallman added eight steals and three assists. Prospect freshman post Lacy Musard hauled in 21 rebounds and Govenor pulled down 18. BRIGHTON ACADEMY (27) — I. Keller 4, Mendoza 6, S. Paisley outscored New Hope 16-9 in the first quarter and 15-6 in the third to provide separation in the Skyline A League affair. The Challengers (10-10, 4-6 SCL) trailed 17-3 out of the gate and 23-11 at the end of one quarter. Hannah Gettman paced Cascade with 18 points, while Jessica Fischer chimed in with 17. Danielle Kent had 17 points and Kayla Causey 15 to keep Glendale atop the SCL standings at 9-1. Brittany Farrer picked up two first-quarter fouls and missed much of the first half. Despite foul problems all game, Farrer finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Britta Beckstead added 11 points and Alex Tomlinson had 11 rebounds and nine points for the Crusaders (6-9, 2-7 SCL).
