Little ones with the sniffles scrub their noses, then grab the spoon for the macaroni and cheese and studies have shown that almost half of adults don’t wash after using the bathroom. Cruise ships have motion-activated sanitizers at each buffet line. Can the health department make such sanitizers mandatory in buffet restaurants here? Remember, Dec. 8-14 is National Handwashing Awareness Week. —Eleanor T., Medford Gary Stevens, program manager for environmental health at the Jackson County Health Department, won’t be requiring sanitizing stations around here. Advertisement He said cruise operators have had to take extreme measures to prevent the spread of noroviruses, which are easily transmitted and cause nasty gastrointestinal problems. Cold and flu viruses are less likely to be spread though contact with contaminated surfaces than noroviruses are. To stay healthy, he recommends diners always wash their hands before eating. Also watch how often restaurant workers change buffet serving utensils (more is better). And if you or the kids are sick, do everyone a favor and stay home.
