I would like to add another name, but do not know who to contact to do so. Could you help me out? -- Mary Ann C., Central Point Unfortunately, there is no more room to put donor's name on the memorial. We checked with Al Mullis, the veteran from Talent who was chairman of the eight-member Veterans Memorial Committee that worked for 12 years to complete the project. The picturesque park is at the corner of Highway 99 and Stewart Avenue in Medford. "There is no place to put anybody's name — the walls are full," said Mullis, a 21-year veteran of the Army. "They can now only add those who are killed or missing in action." The department is now in charge of adding local MIAs and KIAs. However, the original idea for a veterans memorial on the site began in 1919 when Medford-area resident Paul Rynning planted a maple tree in memory of a friend killed in World War I. All told, 51 silver maples would be planted at the site, each for a local person killed in the war to end all wars. The new memorial is for all veterans from the region who died while in uniform. There are now 368 Southern Oregonians killed or missing in action back to World War I on the memorial. The names of more than 8,000 are on the donor walls.
