Cascade Christian overpowers Butte Falls The Cascade Christian girls basketball team used a three-headed monster to outlast Butte Falls in a clash of Class 1A and 2A schools on Friday. Hannah Gettman led the Challengers with 17 points, while Amy Roseberg and Whitney Brookins added 13 and 11, respectively, in the 50-37 victory over the visiting Class 1A Loggers. Butte Falls held a brief lead after the first quarter but Cascade Christian broke the game open with a 34-16 scoring advantage over the second and third periods. "We just started executing better (in the second and third quarter)," said Cascade Christian coach Loren King, whose team improved to 8-1 on the season. "It was a hard-fought game. The kids were really tired after this one." Gettman, a junior guard, kept the Challengers composed in the first quarter when Butte Falls seized the lead and Brookins took over in the decisive third quarter with eight of her team's 22 points. "Those three (Gettman, Roseberg and Brookins) just had outstanding all-around games," said King. "They all provided us with great leadership." Sara Matthews, a post, gave the Challengers fits in the early going with eight of her team-high 14 points coming in the opening quarter. "We wanted to get Matthews in a little foul trouble but it didn't work," said King. "She did a lot of damage to us in that first quarter, and we were trying to go at her." REDMOND 83, ASHLAND 68 - At Ashland, Marla Morin scored a career-high 33 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Ashland, but the Grizzlies suffered their sixth loss in eight outings. Morin and the Grizzlies got off to a slow start. The junior post only accounted for two points in the first period as Ashland fell behind 18-6 against No. 9 Redmond (6-0). The Panthers' full-court pressure forced Ashland into 26 turnovers. Ashland forwards Julia Sobolik and Chloe Hansen had productive games. Sobolik contributed 10 points and 16 rebounds, while Hansen tossed in 14 points and hauled down seven rebounds. Darcee Perdue scored 24 points to pace Redmond. The sophomore post tied her career high with 17 points to go with 16 rebounds and five blocks. The Eagles (1-6) led 23-22 at halftime but found themselves down by as many as eight points in the third quarter. Eagle Point trailed by three entering the final period. Dani Rouhier and Kristina Bateman each came up with five steals for the Eagles. Cassie Pruett scored a game-high 19 points for Crook County. Grants Pass led by one with five minutes left when Bosch, who scored all 10 of her points in the quarter to go along with nine rebounds, pushed Bend ahead with her two treys. Megan Moon led the Cavers (4-3) with 18 points, while Alison Klingel added eight points, nine rebounds and four steals. Senior post Daysha Balloun led Bend (4-2) with 13 points. YREKA 63, PHOENIX 60 - At Yreka, Calif., Phoenix played its best game of the season but came up short in the second round of the winner's bracket at the eight-team Yreka Holiday Invitational. The Pirates (2-6) will play for fourth place in the consolation championship at 4:30 p.m. today at Yreka High. Phoenix trailed by one point with less than one minute to play but failed to connect on two field goal attempts. The Miners converted on a pair of free throws for the final margin of victory. Tiffany Ross sparked Phoenix with 15 points, eight rebounds and six steals. Phoenix led 37-28 at halftime and held a three-point margin entering the final period.
