Maulers top Spartans in 2OT Sep 21, 2014 12:00 AM A A The Missoula Maulers edged the Southern Oregon Spartans, 3-2, in double overtime during Western States Hockey League action at The RRRink on Saturday. The Spartans beat Missoula, 4-0, in their season opener on Friday. Jonathon Lovelace scored two goals for Southern Oregon. After his team fell behind 1-0 in the first period, Lovelace tied things with a short-handed goal using an assist from Doug Gutierrez at the 10:55 mark. The Spartans took the lead on Lovelace’s second goal after passes from Gutierrez and Devin Laird at 17:06 in the period. Southern Oregon led 3-1 after Drew Carriere’s power-play goal on a Mackenzie Wood assist at the 5:01 mark in the second period. But the Maulers would rally with a goal in the second, another in the third and the go-ahead score in the second OT. Corey Schafer had the game-winner at 3:28. Southern Oregon earned a 41-37 shot advantage. Tymen Edelkoort III made 22 saves for the Spartans, who wrap up the three-match series with Missoula at 1:30 p.m. today.
