Local events will mark Veterans Day By Staff report Nov 11, 2016 12:00 AM A A The following are events marking Veterans Day in the Rogue Valley. Veterans Day Commemoration: A ceremony to honor veterans begins at 9 a.m. today at the Oregon Fallen War Heroes Memorial at Don Jones Memorial Park, 223 W. Vilas Road, Central Point. The event includes a Color Guard, patriotic singing, bagpipes, hot coffee and refreshments. Guests and speakers include state Rep. Duane Stark, R-Grants Pass; state Rep. Sal Esquivel, R-Medford; newly elected Secretary of State and Vietnam veteran Dennis Richardson of Central Point; veteran Rick Samuelson of Central Point; and Father Ben Tapia. Call 541-423-1978. Veterans Day Parade and Barbecue: A parade honoring veterans starts at 11 a.m. today in downtown Medford and is followed by a free barbecue with live music from noon to 3 p.m. at Hawthorne Park. Music will be provided by Brian Risling & Airtight Alibi. There'll also be information tables and a Children's Patriotic Activities booth. The event is being sponsored by the Department of Veterans Affairs' Southern Oregon Rehabilitation Center and Clinics and Rogue Valley Veterans & Community Outreach. Call 541-821-0532. Annual Veterans Day Reception: The Veteran's Resource Office will be hosting its annual Veterans Day Reception and lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. today in the Rogue River Room at Southern Oregon University's Stevenson Union, 1250 Siskiyou Blvd., Ashland. Keynote speaker will be state Sen. Kevin Talbert. Local businesses have donated prizes for a raffle. Food and drink are provided. All veterans, students, staff, and community members are invited.
