James Joy of St. Mary’s came away with the other top individual honor with his sixth consecutive coach of the year selection. The Crusaders posted an undefeated 14-0 record in the SCL. Other Crusaders joining Vaninetti on the SCL first team are seniors Melissa Anderson and Libby Trum. Senior outside hitter Janee Johnson of Cascade Christian and Glendale’s Danielle Kent and Joanna Burhalter rounded out the league first-team All-Star selections. Vaninetti, a four-year varsity player, was the Crusader kill leader and second in aces. "She’s steadily improved every year, but this year she improved much greater than the other three," said Joy. "She became more of a complete player. She played quite a bit on the back row and her serves were devasting." Cascade Christian coach Susan Gmur witnessed the effectiveness of Vaninetti. "She got a lot stronger from last year," said Gmur. "She blocks well and its hard to hit around her. She put away her kill shot consistently. She was hard to stop because she hit so high over the net." Trum, a 5-7 outside hitter, repeated as a first-team All-Star from 2001. Trum played the front row, but was the Crusader secondary setter. "The thing that made Libby valuable for us was her defense and serve receive," said Joy. "She has great hands." Anderson was the Crusaders primary setter. "We like to run a quicker offense with a variety of sets," said Joy, "and she was able to do everything we asked her to do." Cascade Christian’s Johnson, 5-11 hitter, was a very consistent player. She was moved from the backrow to the front line this year and responded with powerful net play. Gmur has waged some epic battles against Joy’s St. Mary’s squads the past five years. She credits Joy with being very good game coach and has the utmost respect for the way he conducts his program. "He’s wonderful about sharing information," said Gmur. "He’s always been fair about encouraging, not only his kids, but others too. "James gets more out of his kids than any coach I know," adds Gmur. "His kids are fundamentally sound."
