'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' Celebrate the music of Cindy Lauper, The Go Go's, Whitney Houston, EnVogue, The Pointer Sisters and the B-52s when Craterian Music Hall presents "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun" at 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 3-4, at the Craterian Theater, 23 S. 'Dog Sees God: Confessions of a Teenage Blockhead' This clever parody of Charles Schulz' "Peanuts" re-imagines the decades-old "Peanuts" characters as angst-ridden teens. When Charlie Brown's beloved beagle dies, he questions spirituality and afterlife — while his friends careen through drug use, suicide, eating disorders, violence, rebellion and sexual identity. Bathtub Gin Serenaders The cat's meow and a sure cure for cabin fever, the Bathtub Gin Serenaders will play at 9:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at the Brickroom, 35 N. Main St., Ashland. The band plays Prohibition era-style music from the '20s with a contemporary twist. Look for "Diga Diga Do," by Jimmy McHugh and Dorothy Fields, from the 1924 Broadway show "The Blackbirds," with an insertion of the "Star Wars Cantina Theme." Also, "Lonesome Road' by Nathaniel Shilkret and Gene Austin from 1927. It was a hit for Frank Sinatra in 1957. The band reinterprets it with a New Orleans flavor and a smokin' hot washboard solo. Mason Weed String duo John Weed and Stuart Mason (Molly's Revenge) will play music on fiddle, guitar, mandola and banjo that explores the connections between Ireland and America — both ancient and modern — at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 5, at Grizzly Peak Winery, 1600 E. Holly Theatre Tours See the Holly Theatre Restoration Project unfold during free tours of the historic building. Tours are offered from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. the first Saturday of every month at the theater, 226 W. Sixth St., Medford. Tours begin every half hour and last approximately one hour. Opened in 1930, the Holly is the last remaining grand movie palace in Medford and is being restored to its original grandeur to become the largest indoor entertainment venue in the region. Visitors must wear closed-toe shoes; sandals will not be allowed. There is no heating or air conditioning. John Nilsen Portland recording artist, multi-instrumentalist and composer John Nilsen will present a solo piano concert at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 12, at Paschal Winery, 1122 Suncrest Road, Talent. Look for classical music and original melodies. Nilsen founded his independent record label, Magic Wing, in 1987 and has a catalog of 19 successful titles with international distribution. Kevin Selfe and The Tornadoes Portland singer, songwriter and guitarist Kevin Selfe and his band The Tornadoes will play rockin' electric blues at 10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at Howiee's, 16 N. Selfe's 2015 "Buy My Soul Back," on the VizzTone Label, calls on his "who's who" list of blues artists to create a gem of a recording that that reveals Selfe's dedication to traditional blues. The band was inducted into the Cascade Blues Association Hall of Fame in 2012 for Traditional Blues Act. In 2014, Selfe was inducted for Electric Guitar. Selfe and the band have won 19 Muddy Awards from the CBA, including Traditional Blues Act of the Year (2010-2014), Contemporary Blues Act of the Year (2009, 2013, 2015), Performance of the Year (2012, 2013), Electric Guitar (2012-2014), Northwest Recording of the Year (2013) and National Recording of the Year (2013). Ben Rice Blues Band Portland blues guitarist Ben Rice and his band will perform roots, R&B, funk and soul infused blues and rock at 9 p.m. Saturday, July 30, at Howiee's, 16 N. Front St., Medford. Rice's newest album, "Pour Me Some Whiskey," is an amalgam of blues sub-genres, featuring such songs as the hard-rocking "Wreck on You," the fast, swinging jump blues "Chop You Up," the West Coast-style "Don't Worry Mama' and "I Know You Love Me," from the Memphis soul tradition. Allison Scull and Victor Martin The Dunsmuir, Calif., based saxophone and guitar duo will blend jazz, folk, blues, a little funk, originals and some jazz standards laced with French lyrics at 5:30 p.m. Friday, July 22, at DANCIN Vineyards, 4477 S. Children's Festival The 50th annual Children's Festival — sponsored by the all-volunteer Storytelling Guild of Jackson County — will be held Saturday through Monday, July 9-11, at the Britt Pavilion, 350 S. Fir St., Jacksonville. There will be hours of kid-related entertainment and activities intended to inspire imagination, with more than 35 hands-on art, craft and science projects and the daily feeding of litter-eating dragons Rosabelle and Pebbles. Younger kids can make their own puppets, create sand and easel art and have their faces painted, while older kids can make candles, pottery and wood-working. The festival will be from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday. Food will be available at the site. Admission is $3. Eight Dollar Mountain Southern Oregon bluegrass band Eight Dollar Mountain — guitarist Darren Campbell, banjo player Stuart Green, mandolin player Phil Johnson, stand-up bassist Joe Porto and resonator player Mark Lackey — will perform from 4 to 6 p.m. Monday, July 4, at Creekside Pizza, 92 ½ N. Main St., Ashland. Since coming together in 2010, the band has released three albums, "Wild River Country" (2010), "Riverboat Gambler" (2012) and "Tied to the Tracks" (2014). The band has opened for Peter Rowan, Alison Krauss and eTown, and on NPR's "West Coast Live." Roy Zimmerman Singer, songwriter and satirist Roy Zimmerman will present "This Machine," a program of his original send-ups that lampoon politics, social injustice, poverty, war and human foibles, at 7 p.m. Monday, June 20, at the Ashland library, 410 Siskiyou Blvd. Zimmerman's songs have been heard on HBO and Showtime. He's shared stages with Bill Maher, Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, John Oliver, Kate Clinton and George Carlin. Offerings include the “chicken splat contest,” live music, face painting, a book sale, plant sale, a country store, children’s activities and information about the Applegate and Siskiyou Trail Associations, fire safety, lace-making and more. Aubert, Sherrill and Jones are formerly of Ashland folk band Patchy Sanders. Aubert and Sherrill worked with Grammy-winning producer Dave Clauss, folk singer Jefferson Hamer of Session Americana, Konrad Meisner of the Mike + Ruthy Band and bassist Jeremy McDonald to record the album in a studio in upstate New York. Wine Without Reason The band — singer, songwriter and keyboard player Scott Calamar, pedal steel player Will Bartell, and rhythm section Kevin McKern on drums and percussion and Bruce McKern on bass — has released its independent recording "The Valley of Darkness at the Top of the Stairs in the Center of the Universe." The collection of 12 songs penned by Calamar are a mix of East Coast, West Coast, British Invasion and early '70s influenced alternative sounds. Bartell's pedal steel lends a yearning feel to most of the songs, "Frack You" is pointed at the Oregon LNG pipeline, "Look, Don't Touch" is a tongue-in-cheek look at social interaction and "Center of the Universe" is a tribute to former Ashland hot spot Alex's.
