LOCAL ROUNDUP Jensen's shot boosts Mustangs Charlie Jensen laced a two-run single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Medford Mustangs a 14-13 American Legion baseball victory over the Vancouver Cardinals Monday at Miles Field. Jensen, who was 2-for-5 with three RBIs, blasted a 3-2 pitch off the left-field wall, scoring Kenny Halpin and Brett Haag, who singled earlier in the inning. Tim Alvarez went 3-for-4 and drove in four runs for the Mustangs, and Jared Pagnini was 3-for-5 with one RBI. Nate Mayben also chipped in three hits for Medford, which improved to 21-2. The Mustangs are hosts to North Coos at 6 tonight in an Area 4 doubleheader at Miles Field. L -- Alford. 2B -- SV: Cunha, Bennet. A: Monosoff (2), Rowe. Softball STARS WIN TOURNEY -- At Salem, the Southern Oregon Stars posted a 5-0 record to win the 15th annual Stark Street Tournament. The 16-and-under ASA fastpitch girls softball tournament was held Friday through Sunday. The Stars, players from Crater and Eagle Point high schools, outscored their opponents 35-2. In the title game, they whipped the Salem Slyders 8-0 in five innings. Andrea Perdue pitched the shutout, allowed one hit and striking out five. Rachel Hernandez, Heather Quinn and Kara Ray each went 2-for-3 and scored two runs. Alaina Corliss' three-run triple to left-center field ended the game. Basketball CRATER FINISHES FOURTH -- At Oregon City, the Crater girls basketball team was edged 47-48 by Kennewick, Wash., in the third-place game Sunday at the End of the Trail Basketball Tournament. Oregon City, behind Kara Braxton's 37 points, beat Westview 70-61 in the championship game. Kennewick was led by senior wing Maria Kingsmen, who made four 3-pointers and scored 20 points. Crater's Janelle Sapienza and Jodi McLeod each had eight points. Kingsman, Sapienza and McLeod were named to the all-tournament team. Kennewick stole an inbounds pass and made the layup for a four-point lead with 50 seconds left. Crater's Sarah Pool drained a 3-pointer with one second left.
