Comics change with the times I recently heard that the Mail Tribune is planning to replace the Peanuts comic strip. What's up with that? I've been reading it since I was a kid. If it must go, what will replace it? What's up with that? I've been reading it since I was a kid. If it must go, what will replace it? — Cathy L., Medford. Well, Cathy, time marches on and, despite some appearances to the contrary, so do comic pages. Mail Tribune editor Bob Hunter made the first public notice of the plans to drop Peanuts in his blog (www.mailtribune.com/blogs) a couple of weeks ago. He survived the initial response, but did have to go into hiding for several days. Hunter says the strip is being replaced for a very basic reason: The strip's creator and artist, Charles Schulz, has been dead for eight years. While he stipulated that no one else could carry on with the strip (as has been done with many others), the company that syndicates Peanuts has continued to carry it as reruns. So it's time to move on to some new material and to give a new artist a chance to show his or her stuff. There's been no decision made on what to replace it with. An informal poll will be taken from readers beginning this month. You can get a head start by sending Hunter an e-mail at [email protected]. First you must take the following oath: "I promise not to yell at the editor (verbally or electronically) for taking Charlie Brown and Snoopy out of my life, even if I really want to."
