PREP SOCCER: Grizzlies use big first half to beat EP By Mail Tribune staff Updated: Oct 25, 2022 09:55 PM A A ASHLAND — The third-ranked Ashland girls soccer team bounced back from their first loss of the season in a big way Tuesday night, getting a first-half hat trick from senior forward Brianna Gibbs in a 6-0 win over Eagle Point in Midwestern League action at Walter A. Phillips Field. Gibbs and fellow senior Ini Hammond accounted for five of Ashland’s six goals, with Lena Caballero Uhtoff also scoring in the first half to give the Grizzlies (8-1-1, 3-1-1) a 6-0 lead over the Eagles (2-6-1, 0-5) going into halftime. Gibbs assisted on Hammond’s first goal less than three minutes in, then scored in the 24th, 30th and then just a few seconds before the halftime whistle sounded to cap the big opening half for the Grizzlies, who suffered a 1-0 loss to Thurston this past weekend to snap their eight-game season-opening unbeaten run. Hammond also assisted on two of Gibbs’ three goals. The Grizzlies outshot the Eagles 23-2, with Gibbs and Hammond accounting for 18 of those shots. Boys GRANTS PASS 4, CRATER 1: At Central Point, Crater was unable to recover after a slow start and Grants Pass capitalized on its opportunities to earn the nonleague victory at Dutch Meyer Field. Senior Hunter Miller provided the Comets’ lone goal when he poked the ball out of the Grants Pass goalkeeper’s hands on a bobbled save attempt around the 65th minute. Crater (6-3-3), which is in second place in the Midwestern League with a 3-1-1 record, will wrap up the regular season against Thurston in a game with playoff implications. The Cavemen (10-3), who brought their regular season to a close, finished third in the Southwest Conference. Ashland's Brianna Gibbs, left, seen here in a photo from earlier this season, scored a first-half hat trick in the Grizzlies’ win over Eagle Point on Tuesday night.
