RAIDER ROUNDUP: Touey leads SOU to first win By SOU Sports Information Aug 20, 2022 03:10 PM A A SANTA CLARITA, Calif. — Baylee Touey’s credentials as an NAIA All-American sprinter were on display for the Southern Oregon University women’s soccer team Saturday afternoon against The Master’s (Calif.). Touey, the junior forward from Grants Pass, scored the lone goal as the Raiders broke into the win column with a 1-0 defeat of the Mustangs at Reese Field. In the 18th minute, defender Jordan Bell cleared from SOU’s back line to Touey, triggering a one-woman counterattack. Touey collected the ball and brought it 65 yards up the sideline, leaving several Mustangs in her tracks, until aligning herself with the right post for a 12-yard strike that bounced just inside the left one. Sophomore goalkeeper Ashlynn Hernandez earned the shutout with three saves, but SOU (1-1-0) kept the Mustangs without a shot on goal for the final 52 minutes. Possession favored the Raiders, who had eight shots to TMU’s five, and the Mustangs’ last chance — a good look for Katie Merical inside the box with a minute left — sailed high over the goal. The win was the Raiders’ first over The Master’s — which was picked to finish fourth in the Golden State Athletic Conference — in seven head-to-head matchups. They’d been held scoreless over their three most recent outings against the Mustangs since 2018. The Mustangs dropped to 0-1-0. Touey, a two-time member of the All-Cascade Conference soccer team and three-time All-American as an anchor for SOU’s track relay teams, is up to 13 career goals. Volleyball SOUTHERN OREGON 3, PARK GILBERT (ARIZ.) 0: At Ashland, Southern Oregon scored a straight-set victory against Park Gilbert (Ariz.) for the second time in as many days Friday at Lithia Motors Pavilion to wrap up the season-opening Raider Invitational with a 2-1 record. Junior middle Sadie Byrd topped off an impressive tournament with nine kills on 17 attempts and four assisted blocks, and sophomore outside hitter Hailey Van Well poured in a match-high 10 kills in the 25-21, 25-22, 25-22 decision. The duo dominated late in the match, as Van Well registered five kills and the second set and Byrd had five in the third. The Raiders posted a .232 attacking average compared to a .153 mark for the Buccaneers, who dropped to 1-3 after also dropping a three-setter to No. 11-ranked Concordia (Neb.) earlier in the day. SOU finished strong in every frame to avoid any drama. Leading 22-21 in the first, two Buccaneers errors and Byrd’s kill shut down the initial threat. Tied 22-22 in the second, Hannah Stadstad and Mylena Testoni came through with kills to make it 2-0. And tied 22-22 again in the third, Byrd and Gordon came through with consecutive kills following a Park service error.
