Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend March 16, 2006 Auction benefits victims of domestic violence By SARAH LEMON Mail Tribune Children and victims of domestic violence are to benefit from $230,000 awarded to local nonprofit organizations. Dunn House, Jackson County’s only shelter for battered women and children, received $126,500. It was the largest grant bestowed this year by the Hearts & Vines Foundation, which focuses on curbing domestic violence and responding to victims. The success of last year’s annual Hearts & Vines auction allowed the foundation to distribute $50,000 more than it did last year, said spokesman Dann Hauser. The majority of recipients received larger awards. "We look at them (Hearts & Vines) as a very key component to our funding," said Ed Mayer, director of Court Appointed Special Advocates of Jackson County. CASA received $20,000 — $5,000 more than last year — which will provide for recruitment, training and support of volunteers who advocate for children tangled in the legal system, Mayer said. Advertisement Although CASA is a mandated program, the organization can’t keep pace while adult methamphetamine use renders more and more children wards of the court, Mayer said. The program served 374 children last year. About 400 children are awaiting CASAs, Mayer said. Other Hearts & Vines recipients included Project Dove, a youth anti-violence program run by the Medford School District. That group received $22,000. The Jackson County Council Against Domestic Violence received $20,000. The Children’s Advocacy Center of Medford received $10,000 to continue providing a safe place for interviews and treatment of physically and sexually abused children. The Safe Place, a Jackson County program that provides resources to victims of domestic violence, also received $10,000. The Domestic Violence Foundation, founded by Nancy Brewold Johnson of Medford, was awarded $7,500. Focus on Families — a program operated by Central Point School District — and Asante Health System’s Domestic Violence Program each received $7,000. Funds are generated primarily through the Hearts & Vines auction, a lavish fundraising dinner and auction held each summer. This year’s event is planned for Aug. 5. The foundation, formed by local residents Chris Borovansky and Mark Wisnovsky, has dispersed more than $1.28 million since 1994.
