The Grizzlies defeated Thurston 25-15, 25-11 before being eliminated by seventh-ranked Crook County 25-20, 17-25, 15-11 in the second round of the championship bracket. Ashland defeated Mountain View, Frankfield and Albany in morning pool-play. South Medford also earned a trip to the championship bracket, but stumbled against fifth-ranked Jesuit 25-17, 25-18 in the quarterfinal match. The Panthers lost to West Linn, but rebounded to defeat Sheldon and split the two matches versus Westview in pool play. North Medford beat Crescent Valley, but dropped games to Thurston and top-ranked Central Catholic in pool play. The Black Tornado then moved on to the consolation bracket, where it defeated Springfield 25-14, 25-21 and Lebanon 25-16, 25-19 before losing to Sheldon 25-19. Boys Soccer At Klamath Falls, Ashland all-league midfielder Steven Cory Fisher led the Grizzlies to a 4-0 SOC win over Klamath Union. Fisher assisted on a Joe Fallon goal inside the first 10 minutes, before scoring a goal of his own in the 28th minute that gave Ashland a 2-0 lead at the half. Fisher scored again in the second half and Brendan Golding finished the scoring with two minutes remaining to cap the shutout win. Ashland (7-1, 6-1 SOC) held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks and the Grizzlies’ defense allowed only two Klamath Falls shots. At the halfway point of the SOC regular season, the Grizzlies own a one-game lead over second-place Roseburg — Ashland’s next opponent — in the league standings. Ashland and Roseburg play each other in Roseburg at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Cross Country At Gresham, Ashland senior Natalie Hemphill proved she’ll be a threat at the state meet with a solid performance in the Jim Danner Invitational on Saturday. In the girls Division I race, Hemphill ran a 29-second personal record to take seventh. Her time was 18 minutes, 22.07 seconds. “Natalie was only seven seconds off the first Oregon finisher (third place Shelby Brennan of Aloha) and third overall among the Oregon runners,” Ashland coach Bob Julian Jr. said. “That makes her a state contender.” Boise won the girls Division I team title with 129 points. Jesuit was second with 161. Ashland’s boys fared nicely in Division II, claiming fifth place as a team and taking home a trophy. Spencer Bonney was 33rd individually in 16:49.27, Matt Miner was 35th (16:54.84), Cameron Barleen 37th (16:54.84) and Dennis McCaffrey 39th (16:58.62) out of 168 finishers. “Barleen was running really strong but he got a cramp and was almost walking at the end,” Julian said. “But our boys did great. They’re starting to come around.” Water Polo At Eugene, the Ashland High boys’ and girls’ water polo teams both went 3-1 over the weekend to improve their place in the Southern League standings. The Ashland boys earned blowout wins over Marist (18-2), North Eugene (18-3) and Sheldon (14-4), while the Grizzly girls dominated Marist (11-2) before pulling out tough wins against North Eugene (4-2) and Sheldon (7-5). Ashland’s boys lost to South Eugene 14-6, while the Ashland girls fell to South Eugene as well, though the score was unavailable at press time.
