--> --> May 18: Schleining-Spears go down Ashland Daily Tidings PORTLAND - The Ashland High boys and girls tennis team ended its second day in the state tournament Friday afternoon at the Tualatin Hills Racquet Club and the Portland Tennis Center with only one player left standing - Ari Zaslow. Zaslow notched two wins in the singles consolation bracket, defeating Tualatin's Brett Reiss 8-1 and McKay's Panharra Mam 8-3, setting up a quarterfinal battle with Parkrose senior Marcus Phanthongphay on Saturday. On the girls side of the consolation bracket, Justine Bowen-Jones defeated Tualatin's Taylor Reiss 8-6, but lost her second match to Shannon Moseley of South Eugene, 8-3. The Grizz had two boys doubles teams go down as well. Tyler Coke and Jacob Doty fell to the No.1-ranked team of Ric Mortera and John Bolton from Westview, 6-0, 6-2. Evan Schleining and Kevin Spears defeated McMinnville's Bo Williams and Chris Meyer, 6-1, 6-2 to move on to the second round, then advanced to the quarterfinals by defeating the No. 3-ranked team of Andy Crooks and Andy Faulman from Lincoln, 6-3, 6-1. Schleining and Spears then lost in the quarterfinals to the No. 6 team of Zack Johnston and Sean Ogle of Churchill, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Jessica Baker and Ali Gardiner were the only Grizz girls to play in the first round, where the pair won over Gresham's team of Angie Bloyer and Sheena Surplus, 6-1, 6-4. Their victory celebration was short lived, however, when they lost in the second round to Sheldon's No. 6-ranked team of Kelsey Gillaspie and Jennifer Bennett, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Email your...
