Sharon Weil, 56, was in Aisle 10 around noon on Saturday bending over when a man approached her and hit her in the head with a hammer, The Oregonian newspaper reported. The alleged attacker then walked away to a checkout stand, where he was arrested. Weil is in serious condition after suffering a skull fracture. Her mother, Elaine Savinar, said Weil thought she had been shot. The accused, 65-year-old Eric I. Osterholme of Beaverton, was jailed on attempted murder and assault charges. Osterholme was arrested in Beaverton in 2002 for striking a 6-year-old child “judo” style in the throat when the child said hello to Osterholme in passing at an apartment complex, police said Monday. Beaverton police said that Osterholme was studying to become a teacher. No further details on the man were immediately available.
