AHS ROUNDUP Grizzlies run out of magic in loss to No. 3 Springfield No. 2 Ashland can't overcome four turnovers in MWL loss By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings DailyTidings.com By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Oct. 18, 2014 @ 12:01 am By Joe Zavala Ashland Daily Tidings Posted Oct. 18, 2014 @ 12:01 am » Social News By Joe Zavala There was no field goal off the crossbar this time, and no double-pass touchdown either. Just another sack by Springfield, a kneel down and a possibly a Midwestern League power shift. After pulling off two Houdini escapes in three weeks No. 2-ranked Ashland couldn’t manage a third Friday, as No. 3 Springfield used six sacks, a pick-six and a clutch field goal to drag the Grizzlies back to earth with a 37-26 win before a stunned crowed at Walter A. Phillips Field. This time it was the other team that made all the big plays down the stretch for a comeback victory — the Millers (6-1, 3-0 MWL) scored the last 17 points to overcome a 26-20 fourth-quarter deficit and hand Ashland (6-1, 2-1) its first regular season loss in two years. “I don’t think anybody was ever in control,” Ashland coach Charlie Hall said. “Whenever we were ahead I knew that wasn’t going to be it. I thought that they’re way too good. They just showed their true colors at the end.” In a wild game that saw seven fumbles, including three at the goal line, and two interceptions it was Springfield’s defense that delivered the most crushing blows. Up 27-26 in what had been a back-and-forth game Springfield finally started to pull away when Kyle Shill picked off a pass at the Ashland 35 and outraced everyone around the corner into the end zone to give the Millers a 34-26 lead with 6:10 to go in the game. Three plays later, Ashland quarterback Kyle Weinberg, who was harassed all night, took a hit from behind by Todd Bourassa. The tackle jarred the ball loose and Springfield recovered. Seven plays later, Damon Squires made a 19-yard field goal to all but end the Grizzlies’ comeback hopes. “We’re lucky the momentum shifted our way at the end of the game,” Springfield coach Dave Heuberger said. Ashland thought it got the stop it needed when Squires missed a 37-yard field goal attempt with 3:05 to go, but a running-into-the-kicker penalty gave the Millers a new set of downs and allowed them to run off another 1 minute, 10 seconds off the clock. Ashland outgained Springfield 401 yards to 319, but couldn’t overcome four turnovers, including three fumbles. “We’ve got to capitalize on the opportunities when we have them and we didn’t,” Hall said. “We had penalties, and we had dumb end zone issues. Those things are disappointing as far as what we’re trying to do as a team, to not shoot ourselves in the foot.” Weinberg completed 20 of 36 passes for 257 yards and four touchdowns, and Ashland’s Ryne Robitz rushed for 74 yards. Ashland’s Shashi Penn had seven catches for 148 yards and Parker Layton three catches for 36 yards and two touchdowns. Springfield’s Trever Watson completed 9 of 18 passes for 168 yards and one touchdown and also ran for two TDs, and Daniel Wilson led the Millers on the ground with 135 yards rushing. Ashland trailed 13-6 at the half but scored the first two touchdowns of the second half to regain the momentum and a 20-13 lead. Weinberg’s 1-yard touchdown pass to Max Montgomery completed a 63-yard drive with 7:17 to go in the third, and Weinberg’s 1-yard fade to Max Atteberry capped a 21-yard drive and gave the Grizzlies their first lead of the game. Springfield responded with an 80-yard drive of its own, most of those yards coming on Watson’s 44-yard touchdown toss to Omari Thomas. Squires’ point-after tied it at 20. Weinberg struck again on Ashland’s next possession, hitting Layton over the middle for a 28-yard score and a 26-20 Grizz lead. Layton shook off two tacklers after catching the ball at about the 15. Weinberg’s missed point-after proved crucial three minutes later, however, when Watson completed a 69-yard drive with a 1-yard plunge to tie the game at 26. Squires’ point-after gave the Millers the lead for good, 27-26, with 7:06 to go. Now, Springfield needs just two more wins to clinch the MWL title. First up is next week’s trip to Central Point for a game against Crater, which had Ashland on the ropes last week before the Grizzlies were saved by some fourth-quarter heroics. After that, the Millers host Marist. “People said, ‘Hey, someone might be in the driver’s seat after this one,’” Heuberger said. “But they haven’t seen Crater on film and they haven’t seen Marist on film. We preach let’s take care of one game at a time and our next game’s bigger than this one.” Springfield 6 7 7 17 – 37 Ashland 0 6 14 6 – 26 S – Wilson 50 run (kick failed) A – Layton 1 pass from K.
