--> --> Oct. 5: Grizz girls water polo team dunks Spartans in OT By Larry Berteau Ashland Daily Tidings In a furious battle with enough ebbs and flows to drain the pool, the Ashland High girls water polo club dunked Marist 18-16 in overtime Friday night at the Southern Oregon University tank. With senior captain Keely Zodrow netting the last seven goals - 10 overall - the Grizz battled from a 14-10 deficit with two minutes to go in regulation to pull out the league win. "I'm so excited, and so tired," Zodrow said, catching her breath after the marathon. "We work on our endurance in practice and it was the difference." "I'm so proud of these girls," said first-year head coach Lara Bishop, citing the obstacle her team had to overcome - playing with only two substitutes. "They were so tired (at the break prior to overtime), all I could think to tell them was `breathe.'" Ashland trailed after one period, 2-1, rallied for a 7-4 edge at intermission, and clung to a 10-9 lead after three periods. But Marist surged into the lead at 11-10 with 4:30 remaining, and padded its bulge to 14-11 before Zodrow took over. A pair of Zodrow solo attacks cut the margin to 14-13, before the Grizz ace punished the Lions' goalkeeper off a nifty assist from junior Michelle Smith. An attempt to give the Grizz the win went awry when Smith's shot was deflected at the buzzer. The plucky Grizzlies set the stage immediately in the overtime. Sophomore Ursula Barton swiped the ball at mid-pool and found Zodrow on the wing. The senior captain walked it in for a quick lead. Freshman Julia Coke blocked a Marist attempt, Smith was quick to the ball, and there was Zodrow again for a 16-14 Grizz margin. A pair of Marist breakaways knotted the contest at 16, but Zodrow responded again off assists from Barton. "Down the stretch we had only one thing in mind," Barton said. "Get it to Keely and she'll make a miracle." The win lifted the Grizz to 2-4 in the Southern League. Ashland boys water polo The Grizz boys led at all the quarter stops with a relentless pounding of the Marist goal and swam away with a 15-10 win over the Lions. Junior Michael Stout paced the attack with five goals and four assists as the Grizz upped its mark to 4-1 in league play, 8-6 overall. "They had some players we didn't see (in the first Grizz win at Marist), and they turned it up" Stout said. "But we played together and kept getting opportunities, and cashing in." Stout had plenty of help with junior Nate Jessop finding the net four times and adding a pair of steals, while junior Arron Nelson chipped in with two goals. Senior captain Brian Westerberg picked up four assists and two swipes. The Grizzlies host South Eugene (5-0) today in a first-place Southern League showdown. Email your...
