The Ashland High girls' basketball team had its 10-game winning streak snapped in a 50-39 SOC loss at Roseburg. The Indians, in danger of falling out of the league title chase just four games into the season, improved to 2-2 in league play while dropping the streaking Grizzlies to 3-1. North Medford leads the conference with a 4-0 league mark following a 44-42 win over Crater. Ashland's offense struggled through a horrid 11-for-44 shooting night and scored just 19 points through three quarters in its first defeat since Dec. 6. "Defensively, Roseburg defended us pretty well," Grizz coach Steve Humann said. "They were really contesting, but we had open shots or fairly open shots and we just didn't play well as a team." Junior post Abeni Hill led the Grizzlies with 13 points and junior guard Alysse Carlson was the only other AHS player in double-figures with 11. Roseburg's Katie Fuller led all scorers with 17 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds to help the Indians win the rebounding battle, 29-22. The Indians also held Ashland to only its second sub-40 point game of the season. "We can come up with the same excuses - long bus ride, not playing at home - but we have to come out and do the things that the coaches want to be done, and the things that Sara (Barrett) and I put together and practice," Humann said. Humann added that he was pleased with Hill's performance on both ends of the court. The Grizzlies continue their league schedule Friday at Grants Pass (2-2 SOC). Boys' Basketball Roseburg outscored Ashland 46-28 from the second quarter on en route to a 51-38 SOC win Tuesday night at Mountain Avenue gym. The victory improved the Indians to 3-0 in the conference, while Ashland fell to 0-3, and 4-9 overall. Roseburg's Seth Bauman led all scorers with 13 points, while Jeff Skinner paced the Grizzlies with eight. Ashland failed to take advantage of a major free throw shooting advantage, hitting just 14 of 25 from the charity stripe to Roseburg's 9-for-14 performance. The Grizzlies tangle with Grants Pass (2-1 SOC) next, in a Friday night game that will also be played in Ashland.
