NOTE: ~
Bapbomb is the case involving the explosion at the
Sixteenth Street Baptist Church, 9/ l 5/ 63, Birmingham, in which
four Negro girls were killed.
Birmingham submitted LHM containing pertinent information
from informants indicating actual involvement of prime suspects in this
bombings and indicating the direction and emphasis of our investigation
is sound and has been successful. The corrections requested should be
made so that this LHM can be disseminated to the Department so that
they will be fully advised.

Records of Superior Court oi Fulton County,
Georgia, reflect that this Klan organization was granted
a corporate charter on February 21, 1961, at Atlanta,
Georgia, under the name United Klans, Knights oi the Ku
Klux Klan of America, Inc.
A source advised on February 27, 1961, that
United Klaus was formed as a result of a split in U. S.
Klans, Knights of the Kn Klnx Klan, Inc. According to
the source, the split resulted from a leadership dispute
and United Klans has the same aims and objectives as the
parent group. These are the promotion of Americanism,
white supremacy and segregation of the races.
The first source and a second source advised
in July, 1961, that United Klans, Knights of the Kn Klux
Klan of America , Inc., merged with Alabama Knights, Knights
of the Ku Klux Klan. The merged organization established
headquarters in Suite 401, the Alston Building, Tuscaloosa,
Alabama. The organization is directed by Robert Shelton,
Imperial lizard , and is the dominant Klan group in the
South, with units in several Southern States.!

KNIGHTS OF THE KU KLUX KLAN
Records of Superior Court of Fulton County,
Georgia, reflect that this Klan organization was granted
a corporate charter on February 21, 1961, at Atlanta,
Georgia, under the name United Klans, Knights of the Ku
Klux Klan of America, Inc.
A source advised on February 27, 1961, that
United Klans was formed as a result of a split in U. S.
Klans, Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, Inc. According to
the source, the split resulted from a leadership dispute
and United Klans has the same aims and objectives as the
parent group. These are the promotion of Americanism,
white supremacy, and segregation of the races.
The first source and a second source advised
in July, 1961, that United Klans, Knights of the Ku Klux
Klan of America, Inc., merged with Alabama Knights, Knights
of the Ku.K1ux Klan. The merged organization established
headquarters in Suite 401, the Alston Building, Tuscaloosa,
Alabama. The organization is directed by Robert Shelton,
Imperial Wizard, and is the dominant Klan group in the
South, with units in several Southern states.!

The third paragraph of referenced Bureau teletype
to Eirmingham, ll/16/65, regarding submission of weekly '
airtel summaries reflecting investigation completed the
previous week and including brief comments as to leads._
outstanding and projects contemplated, was initially by _
interpreted on receipt at the Birmingham Office as per- l
taining to the sunaries being prepared as a regular practice
in the GREENBOMBS case.
The only available information appropriate for
submission under the BAPBOMB caption,which would be separate
and distinct from that being furnished the Bureau in the
GREENBOHBS summaries and reports, would be that informant
information of the nature contained in the accompanying
and previously submitted LH's. Any report prepared under
the BAPBQMB caption would necessarily include only that
information obtained as a result of investigation by the
GREENBOHS squad and previously reported under that caption,
causing thereby duplicate reporting.
The Bureau is requested to advise if it is desired
that all investigative activity relating to Birmingham '
bombings continue to be reported under the GREEHBOHS caption
as has been the practice in the past, or whether separate_ -
and mutuallx exclusive reports and summaries be submitted
under BAPBOHB, which would of course require the division
'of the Agent personnel now conducting investigation as one '

Huch of the information contained herein is the
subject matter of reports being submitted under the GREENBOHBS
caption inasmuch as for a period of several months efforts of
all Agents conducting investigation in the Birmingham bombings
were consolidated and results of investigation conducted were
furnished under GREENBOHBS caption.
Investigation reflected herein prior to date of
last report submitted in this matter necessary because results
of that particular investigation not received in time for
inclusion in last Birmingham report.
x The first section of instant report contains infor-
nation regarding oiiicial certiiication of deaths or victims
of the church bombing, this aspect of investigation being
included in a separate section of instant report since it
appears this has not been done in the past and will facilitate
location of necessary information regarding victims should it
be required in the future.
As has been the practice previously, an extra copy
of instant report is being retained at Birmingham in the
event prosecution is instituted in the future and it becomes
necessary to furnish appropriate USA with a copy.
It is noted that the most pertinent information
tending to implicate previously developed suspects in the
church bombi b n furnished by Birmingham informants

This is the case involving the bombing of the Sixteenth Street
Baptist Church, Birmingham, in which four negro children
attending Sunday School were killed. At the time of this bombing the
Kn Ziluit Klan, the National States Rights Party, and other racist groups
were suspected of committing acts of violence against Negroes in the
Birmingham area. The more violent members of these groups were
considered as suspects. The investigation of this matter is continuing
and reports will be furnished to you as they are received.
