"I first joined the Unpte Vine Workers of America, referredto hereinafter as the U. H. TL, ix. R while I was employed at was B,
Springfield, Illinois. I workeci rn er he U. Ll. XII. at }A_Ei_.r_:e__.-1. until
1932, at which time I was desin as c- changing to the :~_r§gi{easi;e,_Qgeu_
.§'or}<ers of Arnerica, referred to hereinafter as P. H. W. I continued to
.*ork*'1n1'iert.he"P.~'Ii. W. until a.r.d including September 2'7, 1937. m
I left the U. E. Ii. ix. 1932, because I felt that the majority of
the niners in Mine B. wanted to join the P. 11. FL, and because I felt
azhat I would receive no benefit for wo:kin.:_ under a union which was con-
trolled by John L. Le-Tie.
"The miners were assessed 15 per cent of our salaries the first
year we worked under the P. 11. I1, and though I felt that this was a.
large sum of money to be taken cut oi my salary by e. union, still I felt
that the P. M. J. made such an tssessnent to build up their organization. *
This was all right with me. I held no office either with the U. IL. J, or
the P. II. J. I have not been interested in union affairs. After the first
year under the P. L1. W. , union <11 es were cheaper thereafter than underthe
U. M. 7!. . -
"Conditions and relations were very good between local 54 of the
P. 1!. Ff. and the L3 Li. H. from September, 1932 to April 1937. I ' '
"Ir; last d_.;- it Eiine B. was on Se,-tenber 2'7, 1937. I received
notice that the mine Ha? going to to-open on September 2'7, 1937., because
I saw a notice to this effect in the news,>ap-srs, and because the whistles
at the nine blew. 1'her-cfore, I went to the mine on this morning to report
to work at seven o'clock, oiled my machine:-fend just before eight o'clock
on thi date I approached the top boss at the nine in charge of all employees
