South, North top jamboree photo by Alex Szlachtianshyn South Medford looked impressive in a four-team boys basketball jamboree Tuesday at North Medford High. South and North Medford each won a pair of 12-minute periods against Crater and Eagle Point. The Panthers defeated Crater 23-14 and Eagle Point 32-13, while North posted a 23-20 win over Crater and edged Eagle Point 22-19. South Medford�s 6-foot-8 junior post, Eric Fiegi, led all scorers in the jamboree with 15 points. Fiegi scored eight against Crater and seven against the Eagles. South senior wing John McKay netted eight points against Crater. North Medford was led by seniors Ben Anderson and Thomas O�Brien. Anderson scored 11 points and had seven rebounds in the jamboree, while O�Brien tallied 10 points and six rebounds. "I enjoyed the fact we were unselfish on offense," said North Medford coach Gene Quilhaugh, whose team was missing four key players because of North�s extended football season. Black Tornado junior Gabe Burchfiel had for eight points and seven rebounds. Crater�s top scorer in the jamboree was senior center Andy Haas (10 points), while Eagle Point was paced by senior Danny Acrey (10 points). ASHLAND 61, MOUNTAIN VIEW 60 � At Ashland, Nick Ehlers sank three free throws in the final 14 seconds to boost Ashland over Mountain View in the season-opener for both teams. The Grizzlies led by seven points with less than two minutes to play but the visiting Cougars clawed back to tie the game on a 3-point basket by Grayson Tenney with 13.9 seconds to play. Ehlers� free throws put Ashland ahead 63-60. The Cougars scored a 2-point basket with 2.9 seconds left for the final score. Tenney tallied a game-high 24 points for Mountain View while Aaron Cate and Noah Shields had 14 points each for the Grizzlies. Ashland built eight-point leads in the second and fourth periods but couldn�t pull away from the Bend-based team. ROGUE RIVER 59, BROOKINGS 50 � At Rogue River, junior guard Derrick Schoner scored a game-high 21 points and Jason Luchterhand added 20 points and nine rebounds as Rogue River triumphed in its season opener. The Chieftains led 29-20 at halftime, but Brookings tied the game at 40 entering the final period. Schoner and Luchterhand combined for 13 points in the fourth quarter as the Chieftains outscored the Bruins 19-10.
