Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend May 22, 2005 North’s Hilmer, Wilson lose in doubles semifinals BEAVERTON — The North Medford No. 2-seeded doubles team of senior McKenzie Hilmer and junior Lauren Wilson seemed in control in the semifinals of the Class 4A state tennis championships Saturday. But Jesuit’s No. 4-seeded Clare Dodge and Carolina Lilley rallied from one set down to defeat Hilmer and Wilson 1-6, 7-6 (3), 6-3 at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center. Defending state champions Rebecca Berger and Rachel Berger of Hermiston defeated Dodge and Lilley in the doubles finals, 6-4, 6-3. Hilmer and Wilson lost to the top-seeded Berger sisters in last year’s final. North Medford coach Dale Jensen was pleased with the performance of Hilmer and Wilson after the first set of the semifinals. "(Hilmer-Wilson) were playing extremely well," said Jensen. "The other team was nervous and made a lot of mistakes." Advertisement But the freshman Lilley turned the match around with her aggressive play. "(Lilley) started to dominate at the net," said Jensen. "They started putting on a lot of pressure and took our girls out of their game." The Black Tornado pair could not find an answer to counter the offensive play of Dodge and Lilley, who gained more confidence as the match progressed. In the girls singles finals, No. 2-seeded Laura Neal of Sunset knocked off top-seeded Yvette Ly of Centennial, 6-0, 5-7, 6-0. Jesuit won the girls team title. In boys, the North Medford freshman team of David Longmire and Michael Tribble won a consolation semifinal match before losing in the finals. Longmire and Tribble defeated Kevin Pfeiffer and Hank Bauer of Clackamas, 8-5, then fell in the finals 7-6 (2), 6-4 to Jake Martin and Christian Cwielong of Grant. Top-seeded Ric Mortera of Jesuit defeated second-seeded Steve Robertson of West Linn, 6-4, 6-4, to win the singles title. In doubles, No. 1-seeded Lee Lenker and Daniel Becker of Sunset outlasted Vetu Mam and Charles Tran of McKay, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2. Grant edged Jesuit, 17-16, for the boys team title.
