Hey Sequoia highlights another record day at GPD By Mail Tribune staff reports Oct 21, 2020 02:19 PM A A GRANTS PASS — Another record-breaking day at Grants Pass Downs was highlighted by the longest race in the track’s history Tuesday, with jockey Nakia Ramirez guiding Hey Sequoia to victory in a main event that covered 1 and 11/16ths miles. The featured Chuck Potter Memorial Marathon carried a $12,600 purse for winning trainer Quinn Howley, who saw Hey Sequoia make a big move on the final turn and gallop home to victory lane in 2 minutes, 59.53 seconds. It has been more than 25 years since a race in the state of Oregon has gone that distance or longer, and it was Hey Sequoia’s second win of the fall meet. That marquee event helped play a part in another big day in terms of handle for GP Downs, with the track turning in another record day after Monday’s breakthrough that saw a record $412,813 handle. Thanks largely in part to a record off-track betting day of $428,161, the official handle Tuesday was a record-smashing $445,813. On-track betting, with only 244 in attendance due to COVID-19 precautions, reached $17,652 on the 10th day of the meet. Jockey Jose Figueroa proved to be the only rider with multiple wins, steering his way to victory in the third, sixth and ninth races. Racing resumes Monday with six days to go in the meet.
