"Brainfreeze" is a term thrice trademarked by 7-Eleven Corp. of Dallas, Texas, as it applies to: drinking straws; "frozen confections, namely ice pops"; and, to the demise of Dutch Bros.’ failed product name "Dutch Brain Freeze," "semi-frozen soft drinks" (i.e. 7-Eleven’s ubiquitous Slurpee, which beat Dutch Bros.’ 2004 trademark filing by two years). Now that that’s out of the way, here’s an answer:According to Assistant Professor Joseph Hulihan with Temple University’s Department of Neurology, your head hurts because you’ve just consumed a very cold substance too quickly. As for the how, it’s pretty similar to a migraine and sometimes it actually triggers a migraine. The pain lasts for as little as 30 seconds or as long as 5 minutes.
