Local trio garners first-team nod Staver, Hunter, LaFontaine gain top nods on all-state lists By TIM PYLE Mail Tribune To the victors go a surprisingly small portion of the all-state spoils. The all-state soccer teams were announced Tuesday, and neither South Medford nor St. Mary’s — the state’s Class 4A and 2A/1A boys state champions, respectively — received nearly the honors they probably expected. The Panthers did place senior sweeper Spencer Hunter on the 4A first team, and Crusaders senior forward Michael Staver earned a spot on the 2A/1A first team. Senior forward Corey O’Neill (second team) and senior central midfielder Josh Williams (honorable mention) are South’s other honorees; junior stopper Duncan MacDiarmid (second team) and sophomore central midfielder Austin Grant (honorable mention) are the other two St. Mary’s players recognized. Crusaders first-year head coach Matt Faurot is the 2A/1A boys coach of the year. Advertisement Crater senior forward Sarah LaFontaine made the 4A girls first team but is the Southern Oregon Conference’s lone representative on that list. Despite his team’s somewhat paltry presence, South head coach Dave Potter couldn’t find too much fault with the 4A boys list. "It’s a difficult situation because you’re limited to exactly 11 votes — 10 field players and one goalkeeper, I believe," Potter says. "I really had my fingers crossed that Corey would get first team. But second team is certainly an honor." The Panthers’ leading scorer, O’Neill tallied 20 goals and dished seven assists, including four and two, respectively, in the playoffs. Hunter, the SOC player of the year, scored the game-winning goal with 6 minutes, 54 seconds remaining in overtime of the state-championship match. He was the leader of a defense that posted 10 shutouts and was always an offensive threat despite his position at the back of the formation. South’s 1-0 win over Redmond punctuated a 17-2-1 season with the program’s second-ever state crown (the first came in 1997). "As the saying goes, that was the shot heard ‘round the world or, in this case, the shot heard ‘round the state," Potter says of Hunter’s title-clincher, which was a dead-ball laser from 20 yards out. "It was the fatal blow to Redmond." Nevertheless, Redmond placed five players on the all-state list and had head coach Ken Marshall named coach of the year. Hood River Valley senior central midfielder Alex Ponce is the 4A boys player of the year. South defeated Ponce’s Eagles, 2-0, in the semifinals, but Potter says Ponce is worthy. "I felt that he and Spencer were both the two most deserving players in the state tournament," says Potter, who voted for Ponce as player of the year, given that he can’t pick his own players. Potter was simply pleased to have his three senior leaders make all-state. "They were our heart right up the middle," he says of Hunter, Williams and O’Neill. He also remains proud as can be about the championship season. "The feeling of completeness and wholeness as a coach is so incredibly rewarding," he says. "It just keeps lasting." St. Mary’s secured its state title in similarly dramatic fashion, as Grant’s deflected shot with one second left on the scoreboard clock was the difference in a 1-0 overtime win over Catlin Gabel. "We just had our team banquet this past weekend, and it was like a return to the moment," says Faurot, whose team finished a perfect 18-0. "It was just a wonderful thing to be a part of." The District 3 player of the year, Staver scored 19 goals and dished six assists to earn first-team all-state honors for the second straight fall. "Every game, he’s on — he’s always a scoring threat," Faurot says. "When he’s in possession of the ball, something’s gonna happen." MacDiarmid scored the game-winner in the Crusaders’ 3-2 overtime win at Western Mennonite in the state semifinals and was a force for the defense all year. Grant tallied seven goals — none more important than the last — and dished nine assists. Faurot expressed disappointment that senior forward Sean Snider, who tied Staver for team-high scoring honors with 19 goals, didn’t get a spot on the listing. LaFontaine, an honorable mention all-state pick last year, scored 20 goals and was named the SOC player of the year in leading Crater to a 10-4 season. For 4A boys, Crater senior goalkeeper Tomas Iboa (second team) and North Medford junior forward Luis Cabrera (third team) found spots. In 3A/2A/1A girls, District 6 player-of-the-year Heather Olliffe, a senior forward from Henley, made the first team. Hidden Valley senior forward Shea Ford and Phoenix senior central midfielder Kat Cox carved niches on the second team, while Hidden Valley senior midfielder Nina Jaramillo and Phoenix junior goalkeeper Jaclyn Unruh received honorable mention. For 3A boys, junior forward Jose Melgoza, the Skyline Conference player of the year, made the first team. Phoenix senior forward John Feeney is a second- team selection, and Phoenix junior central midfielder Jaime Escabedo and Hidden Valley senior central midfielder Danny Richard got honorable mention.
