"We have all pooled together our resources and our interests and we will come up with questions for the candidates," said Robin Stroh, voter service chairwoman for the League of Women Voters. Stroh, who will moderate the forums, said this is the largest coalition ever assembled to sponsor candidate forums, bringing together candidates in different races for the Legislature. Each forum will feature Senate District 3 candidates Alan Bates and Jim Wright, House District 6 candidates John Doty and Sal Esquivel, and House District 5 candidates Peter Buckley and Joanna Lofaso. A different topic will be highlighted at each forum, including children and families, human services and economic development. Advertisement Stroh said the coalition will meet next week to work out specific questions that will be asked of the candidates. Audience members will also write questions down on cards that will be posed to the candidates toward the end of each forum. Carin Niebuhr, who heads the Jackson County Commission on Children and Families, said the forums will provide a better opportunity to focus in on specific issues. "We thought it would be a great idea rather than having a bunch of separate forums," she said. "We could all pull together and go into depth with at least three of the races." While Niebuhr’s expertise is on children and families and human services, she said the economic development topic has a bearing on the other two. "The reality is if families don’t have jobs, they will be missing out on a whole lot of things," she said. "They are all tied together." Besides Niebuhr’s and Stroh’s organizations, the sponsoring groups involved in the forum are the Ashland Chamber of Commerce, Children First for Oregon, Health Care Coalition of Southern Oregon, Jackson County Housing Coalition, Rogue Valley Board of Realtors, Rogue Valley Civic League and Senior and Disability Services. The forums will be broadcast live on RVTV, Ch. 30. Topic: Economic Development. Audience members who wish to pose questions are urged to arrive at 7 p.m. for each meeting to allow enough time to fill out questions on cards.
