No arrests made in Applegate homicide APPLEGATE - An Applegate man was killed in a shooting late Tuesday, but there were no arrests made Wednesday in connection with his death. John Alan McBeth, 35, apparently had been arguing with a Medford man at a Hogan Road residence when he was shot at about 9:25 p.m. Jackson County sheriff's deputies would not disclose the type of weapon used in the shooting, saying only that McBeth was shot once. At least three people, one a woman, were at the home at the time of the argument, said sheriff's Lt. Dewey Patten. Someone at the home reported the shooting to sheriff's deputies, who later found McBeth's body inside the house. Investigators on Wednesday were considering whether any arrests would be made, Patten said. Detectives had yet to determine if there was any crime committed in McBeth's death, he said. The shooting may have been accidental or in self-defense, he added. Patten declined to say whether McBeth was armed or if drugs or alcohol were involved. The sheriff's office did not release the names of any suspects Wednesday. McBeth was reportedly waiting for the Hogan Road home's residents to move out before he then moved in, said Patten. McBeth had lived at the residence before, Patten said, adding that the address was listed on McBeth's driver license. Detectives from the county's Major Assault and Homicide Unit along with members of the district attorney's office were examining the scene Wednesday afternoon. The district attorney's office was slated to review the case before any arrests would be made, Patten said.
