Panther boys fall shy in tennis match South Medford freshman Ben Works knocked off veteran Charlie Strickler in No. 2 singles, but the inexperienced Panthers dropped a 6-3 dual boys tennis match to Grants Pass in the Southern Oregon Conference Thursday at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. "We were very competitive," said South Medford first-year coach Jackie Barker, whose team is comprised primarily of underclassmen. Works prevailed in a three-set match against Strickler, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2. "I was very pleased with Ben Works," said Barker. "He stepped up his game. He was very aggressive coming to the net." The Panthers� (2-3, 0-3 SOC) other victories came from juniors Sky Sevcik and Dane Gerrard in No. 3 and No. 5 singles. Grants Pass swept all four doubles matches. SINGLES � Paul Dickerson, GP, d. ASHLAND 6, ROSEBURG 3 � At Ashland, Kevin Spears� and Shane Lloyd�s strong play led the way as Ashland maintained its perfect record. Spears won 6-1, 6-0 over Zane Consiglio-Lahti at No. 2 singles, and Lloyd won in No. 4 singles, 6-2, 6-2, over Joe Lee to help the Grizzlies to improve to 3-0 in the Southern Oregon Conference and 6-0 overall.
