BOYS PREP SOCCER Grizz, Mustangs play to tie MURPHY -- Zack Potocki's goal from 10 yards out on a cross from Will Dolan in the 80th minute allowed Ashland to tie the Mustangs, 2-2, in non-conference play. Hidden Valley, who led for much of the game, took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Kenny Pipher off a penalty kick. Ashland tied the score at 1-1 on a goal by Scott Beaver. Scott Palmer's goal in the 65th minute gave the Mustangs a 2-1 lead before Potocki tied the match. Ashland has a 2-0-1 record and Hidden Valley is 1-1-1. GRANTS PASS 1, NORTH BEND 1 -- At Grants Pass, after playing to a scoreless tie at halftime, Joe Loomis gave Grants Pass (1-1-1) the lead with a goal five minutes into the second period. North Bend knotted the score at 1-all at the 65th minute when a ball went off a Grants Pass defender into the Cavemen's net. ROSEBURG 3, THURSTON 1 -- At Springfield, Ryan Holt scored two goals to lead the Indians (3-0). Shelby Brody had the third goal for Roseburg. PHOENIX 3, SOUTH UMPQUA 1 -- At Talent, John Hendricks and Al Albright each had one goal and one assist for Phoenix (1-1) in the non-conference match at Hagler-James Park. South Umpqua caught the Pirates in transition and scored the game's first goal by Lyra Fabiyanic from 12 yards out with eight minutes gone in the first half. Phoenix tied the game at the 25th minute on a breakaway by senior forward Sean Crowley after a Hendricks steal. Hendricks, a sophomore midfielder, gave Phoenix a 2-1 lead two minutes into the second half on an assist from Albright. The Pirates received an insurance goal by Albright at the 75th minute off an assist by Jaime Bugarin. Phoenix had a 20-10 advantage in shots on goal. Phoenix junior goalkeeper Anthony Machado registered seven saves. ST. MARY'S 2, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 0 -- Zack Rote scored twice and Andrew Lundt kept the Challengers at bay in goal for a non-conference victory. Rote, a junior, put St. Mary's ahead 1-0 at the 34th minute by taking a pass from sophomore Matt Burt and driving a 15-yard shot into the net. Rote scored again at the 45th minute, trapping a clearing ball 30-yards out and then ramming a right-footed shot into the bottom left corner of the goal.
