Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 13, 2005 Phoenix routs Mustangs behind Barrett, defense Prep Roundup TALENT — Phoenix got solid pitching and played errorless defense in winning its third straight softball game, 10-0 over Hidden Valley in Skyline Conference play Tuesday. "We were really focused on defense today," said Pirates coach Molly Pendergast. "The infield was tight, and Taylor (Barrett) pitched a lot of ground balls in great locations." Barrett tossed a four-hitter and struck out five in the five-inning contest. "She threw wonderfully," said Pendergast. "She threw hard and they had trouble connecting." After two scoreless innings, the Pirates (4-4, 3-1 Skyline) scored three runs in the bottom of the third inning, then put the game away with four in the fourth. In that frame, with Nicole Engle at third and Emily Lubonski at second, a bunt by the Pirates Akane Arai was fielded and thrown away, allowing both runners in. Advertisement Robyn Singleton doubled to score Arai, and Jaclyn Unruh later singled in Singleton. "Subtract that tough fourth inning and it’s a close game," said Pendergast of the Mustangs’ three-error inning. "We did a really good job base running and took advantage of errors." Arai went 2-for-2 and led the Pirates with three RBIs. Singleton and George each went 2-for-4 and had two RBIs. Knapp finished with two hits and Alisa Wedam added a double and an RBI for the Hornets (6-5, 5-1 Skyline). Rogue River’s Cass Giesbrecht went 2-for-3 with a triple, while Nichole Shoup, Rhonda Winfrey and Leah Perkins each added two hits apiece for the Chieftains (0-5 Skyline). Girls Tennis NORTH MEDFORD 6, KLAMATH UNION 2 — At Klamath Falls, Lauren Wilson won in her second straight outing at No. 1 singles to lead North Medford in Southern Oregon Conference play. Wilson, who normally teams up with McKenzie Hilmer as North’s top doubles tandem, defeated Denise Ledgerwood, 6-0, 6-0. North’s Sonia Aguilera and Erica Schultz recorded a difficult 6-0, 3-6, 6-4 victory over Carly Cox and Kelsey Pellegrino in No. 1 doubles. The Black Tornado’s Maria Fuertes and Sophie Timmermans also had a competitive match in No. 2 doubles with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 triumph over Chelsey Andrews and Hannah Watah.
