The Pirates answered the call again and grabbed the inside track in District 6 with a 1-0 victory over host St. Mary’s. Ashley Novak punched in an unassisted goal in the 26th minute, and the Pirates made the lead stick to stay unbeaten at 3-0. Phoenix ousted Hidden Valley, another strong contender for the league title, on Saturday. "Based on everything we’ve seen," said Phoenix’s John Doty, who shares coaching duties with Dan Sporrer, "(St. Mary’s), us and Hidden Valley are all pretty much equal. "This was a nice win for us." Advertisement Novak gave the Pirates a leg up when she beat a defender and drove home the game’s lone goal into the lower right corner of the net. Phoenix finished with 11 shots on goal, while St. Mary’s (1-1) managed six. Pirate forward Marci Klimek and Crusaders’ sweeper Liz Tribelhorn didn’t get in on the scoring, but the two waged quite a battle to maintain possession for their respective teams. "Those are two of the best players at their positions in the league," said Doty. "Marci beat Liz a couple of times and Liz beat Marci a couple of times. They made a pretty good show of it." Crusader goalkeeper ShaLane Wilson left the contest with about 10 minutes to play with a head injury. The senior was on the ground with possession of the ball and was inadvertently kicked in the head by a Phoenix player and was taken to a hospital as a precaution. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 3, ROGUE RIVER 0 — At Rogue River, junior forward Sarah Brown turned in a hat trick for Cascade Christian. Brown broke a scoreless tie 16 minutes into the second half and tallied again two minutes later. Challenger goalkeeper Katie Stieglitz had eight saves. HIDDEN VALLEY 1, HENLEY 0 — At Murphy, Kayla Flick decided the defensive struggle with a second-half goal for host Hidden Valley. Flick scored after Alex Kaiser assisted her in the 67th minute. Sophomores Bonnie Roselle and Melissa Henner highlighted the Mustang defense, with Henner posting the shutout in goal. NORTH VALLEY 5, MAZAMA 0 — At Merlin, Kayla Wilhelm scored two goals and Emily Turnside had three assists to lead North Valley. Emily Morehouse and Carli Clark added goals for the Knights, who are undefeated. Boys LASALLE 3, PHOENIX 0 — At Milwaukie, top-ranked LaSalle dealt Phoenix a loss in nonconference action as the Pirates struggled without starting goalkeeper John Rowden. Ricky De La Torre filled in for the Pirates, but the defense was overmatched as LaSalle scored twice in the first half and once in the second off a free kick. HENLEY 1, HIDDEN VALLEY 0 — At Klamath Falls, Henley won the first battle between traditional Skyline powers with the lone goal coming from Phillip Pena in the 33rd minute. Anthony Olson earned the shutout in the net for Henley. ILLINOIS VALLEY 3, ROGUE RIVER 2 — At Cave Junction, Logan Jackson led Illinois Valley with two goals in the Skyline victory. Jackson sandwiched his scores — including the game-winner at the 54th minute — around a goal by Daniel Clausnitzer. Rogue River, which had tied it 2-2, got scores from Adam Fuller and Timmy Perston. MAZAMA 4, NORTH VALLEY 2 — At Klamath Falls, Mazama, which outshot North Valley 33-12, recovered from a halftime deficit for the Skyline win. The Knights got goals from Jordan Marsh at the 2-minute mark and, after Eve Melgoza answered for Mazama, the Knights regained the lead, 2-1 at halftime, on a Chris Stambaugh score at the 35th minute. Mario Barajas scored twice and Melgoza once in the second half to rally the Vikings.
