South Medford boys place third in tourney RED BLUFF, Calif. - The South Medford boys basketball team rebounded nicely from its first loss, then picked up some unexpected hardware Saturday at the Red Bluff Daily News Classic. Afterward, South was informed that it is the first entire team in the 12-year history of the tournament to be selected to the Mickey Bitsko all-attitude team. The award - which can honor anybody involved in the tournament, from players to coaches to scorekeepers, etc. - came as a welcome surprise to Panthers head coach Dennis Murphy and his players. "What they told us is, 'You guys epitomize what this award is about,'" Murphy said. "'You truly represent basketball the way it's meant to be played.' "For them to give it to my team, it makes me feel very good about what we're doing with this program." As for the game, South went strictly man-to-man on defense in the second half after being lit up for six 3-pointers by Hanford (6-3) in the opening 16 minutes. Ahead 32-30 at the break, the Panthers embarked on a 22-9 tear through the third quarter to pull comfortably in front. "We just cranked up our defense a few notches, and that was the difference," Murphy said. "We played real well." The Crusaders (7-4) shot 65 percent against Vancouver College. Michael Fiddler sparked St. Mary's with 17 points, six rebounds, three blocks and three assists. The junior post was 7-of-7 from the field. The Crusaders had 18 assists on 24 field goals. Senior point guard Thatcher Jones, playing on a sprained ankle suffered Friday, had seven assists and nine points. In the earlier game, St. Mary's led 20-17 at halftime, but Santiam Christian opened the second half on a 9-2 run. The Crusaders only managed four points in the quarter and trailed 30-24 entering the final period. Santiam Christian capitalized on a big advantage from the free-throw line. The Eagles were 13-of-22 from the line, while St. Mary's made 3-of-6. The 6-7 Fiddler had another strong performance with 15 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks.
