Panthers idled due to hoops infraction South Medford's road trip over the weekend turned out to be a short one. The Panthers lost to South Eugene High Friday night in Eugene and were scheduled to play at North Eugene Saturday afternoon, but the latter game was called off after the Medford school was sanctioned for an improper scrimmage. The South Medford players scrimmaged against a group of alumni over the Thanksgiving Day holiday, South Medford assistant principal Paul Cataldo said. "We had to count that as a game," said Cataldo, who is responsible for overseeing athletics at South Medford High. Cataldo said the penalty meted out by the Oregon School Activities Association was part of other sanctions previously reported in the Mail Tribune. "It was pointed out to us that it might count as a game so we reported to the OSAA," Cataldo said. "They came to us and said it counts as a game." Thus, the Panthers called off their game with North Eugene. South Medford's heads to a three-day tournament at Red Bluff, Calif., beginning Thursday.
