Who pays the salaries of the library — city or county — and who does the hiring? — May A., Medford Thanks to generous taxpayers who approved a $38.9 million library bond in 2000, we’re building a Jackson County library within the city of Medford — among other things. "I suppose you could call it a Medford branch, since it does serve the city of Medford," said Deputy County Administrator Dave Kanner. "We prefer to call it the Central Library because in addition to housing the largest collection, it will provide office space for Jackson County Library Services." Those other services include administration, technical services and outreach, in addition to Rogue Community College’s collection. You’re right on the money about the location, May. The Central Library will be built downtown, on the western half of the block between Ninth and 10th streets bounded by Central and Riverside avenues. Its completion date is expected to be fall 2003 or winter 2004. To answer the other half of your inquiry, the county hires library employees and foots the bill when it comes to their salaries. The Medford library's construction budget is $14,028,000, with an overall budget of $18 million.
