The Snap-On Valley Thunder is the seventh and final leg of the NHRA Northwest Division. It’s the biggest race of the season at the dragway and the most important. "Several championships could be decided," said racing promoter John Skinner. The event will feature more than 400 cars in eight categories, including 260 mph top alcohol dragsters and top alcohol funny cars. The speeds are slightly slower than the 300 mph reached at NHRA national events. "But really," said Skinner, "it’s hard to tell the difference." Drivers compete for points leading to national and divisional championships. Gates open at 8 a.m. both days. Today, qualifying and time trials begin at 10 a.m. Top alcohol dragsters and top alcohol funny cars will have three qualifying sessions, at 3, 6 and 9 p.m. Qualifying and time trials continue Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and eliminations begin at 2 p.m. Top alcohol dragster and top alcohol funny car eliminations begin at 5 p.m. Winners at last year's event were Rick Santos in top alcohol dragster, Pat Austin in top alcohol funny car, Brian Hyerstay in comp eliminator, Steve Wann in super stock, Ted Seipel in stock, Larry Scarth in super comp, Don Kalina in super gas and Roy Neal in super street. Tickets, including pit pass, are $15 Friday and $17 Saturday. A two-day ticket is $30. Tickets for children 7-13 are $5 each day, and those 6 and under are free with a paid adult.
