Defense rules as Phoenix sweeps past IV CAVE JUNCTION � John Hendricks and David Peterson supplied the offense for Phoenix, but it was the defense that enabled them to operate freely in a 6-0 non-conference boys soccer win over Illinois Valley Thursday. "Those are guys that are really making it work for us right now," said Phoenix coach Dennis Flenner of his defense. Sweeper Al Albright and stopper Chris Swann, who scored a goal, worked well together, said Flenner, and fullbacks Lane Munroe and Phillip Baur put the clamps on. "The defense is putting us in a position where nobody�s shooting on us," said the coach. "That really makes it easy to do what we want to on offense." Peterson scored two first-half goals on assists from Hendricks and John Feeney, and Hendricks scored the first goal of the match on a pass from Munroe. Up 3-0 at halftime, the Pirates, who improved to 2-0 overall, doubled their pleasure in the second half. Adam Dietrick and Hendricks scored on assists from Swann and Peterson, respectively, and goalie Tony Machado scored on a penalty kick after Swann was taken down hard in the box. On offense, said Flenner, juniors Hendricks and Peterson "are kind of running the show. They�re both on fire." HIDDEN VALLEY 6, CRATER 4 � At Murphy, senior Matt Johnson erupted for five of Hidden Valley�s goals to lead the Mustangs to a non-conference win over Crater. The Comets (1-3) held a 4-3 lead until Johnson evened things up six minutes into the second half and then put Hidden Valley ahead to stay 24 minutes in. Jason Licato tallied two scores for Crater, and Scott Malone and Leo Espinoza each notched one. KLAMATH UNION 6, MAZAMA 0 � At Klamath Falls, visiting Klamath Union improved to 4-0 in non-conference play as the Pelicans spoiled Mazama�s season-opener. Zach Tucker and Louis Garcia scored first-half goals for the Pels, while Krister Balm, Richard Guerrero, Travis Baker and Adam Wendt found the goal in the second half. ROSEBURG 3, THURSTON 1� At Roseburg, Roseburg grabbed a 2-0 halftime lead en route to squaring its non-conference record at 2-2. Roseburg�s Kyle Russel scored eight minutes into the match, taking an assist from Ryan Felker. Kevin Travis made it 2-0 with five minutes to play when Thurston�s goalie misplayed the ball. After Thurston closed to within 2-1, Jered Moss tacked on an insurance goal midway through the second half on a penalty kick. Girls CASCADE CHRISTIAN 5, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0 � Kali Warren scored three of her team�s five goals to lead Cascade Christian to a win in its first-ever match. Katie Whitlock tallied the first score for the Challengers 10 minutes in. Cascade scored all of its goals in the first half. Carrie Longan added a goal, while Jessica Ennis and Amie Sumrall shored up the defensive effort. The Challengers take on St. Mary�s on Saturday. ST. MARY�S 2, HENLEY 2 � Margo Chamberlain�s goal with three minutes left boosted host St. Mary�s into the tie in non-conference match between District 6 playoff contenders. Chamberlain scored off Emily Smith�s second assist of the match. Smith also fed Kim Tiger in the 16th minute of the first half to make it 1-1. Henley�s goals came from Becky Schwartz five minutes into the match and form Katie Millard seven minutes after halftime. St. Mary�s, 1-0-1 overall, dominated the first half with 16 shots on goal to four, but the second half was a back-and-forth, even affair. PHOENIX 5, BROOKINGS 0 � At Phoenix, freshman Sarah Kieffer scored two goals and Larissa Wiltrout added two assists as Phoenix rolled over Brookings in a non-conference contest. The tandem produced identical numbers in Phoenix�s 3-0 win over Eagle Point on Tuesday. Allison Wilt, Annie Kulig and Hannah Wilt also added goals as the Pirates improved to 2-0. Phoenix goalie Kat Cox, also a freshman, didn�t see much action, having to thwart only five attempts by Brookings while the Pirates bombarded the Brookings� goal with 66 attempts. THURSTON 4, ROSEBURG 2 � At Springfield, Shannon Tarvin scored just 30 seconds into the game for Roseburg but the Indians couldn�t sustain the momentum in the non-conference loss. Roseburg�s Erin Goodell tied it in the second half but Thurston scored at the 25-minute mark to take the lead for good. The Indians fell to 2-2 on the season. GRANTS PASS 8, NORTH BEND 1 � At Grants Pass, Stephanie Clubb and Alison Klingel each had two goals to lead Grants Pass to the non-conference win. The Cavers, who led 7-0 at the half, improved to 1-0-2 on the season. ASHLAND 2, MARIST 1 � At Eugene, Lindsay Huyett and Hanna Seltzer each scored a goal to lead Ashland to a non-conference win. Huyett staked the Grizzlies (1-0) to a 1-0 halftime lead on an unassisted goal and, after a Marist score tied things up 23 minutes into the second half, Seltzer scored off an assist from Huyett.
