Klingel's free throws sink Tornado Alison Klingel scored only two points Friday night for the Grants Pass Cavers, but they were back-breakers for North Medford. With 40 seconds to play and the Cavers holding a 34-33 lead, Klingel toed the free-throw line for a one-and-one. After North used a timeout to ice the sophomore, she calmly dropped in both charity shots to give her team a cushion and Grants Pass held on from there to gain a 38-33 Southern Oregon Conference girls basketball win in the North gym. "You have to give her credit," North Medford coach J.T. Thomas said. "She made the shots when they needed them." Conversely, the Black Tornado couldn't buy a basket in crunch time as North went 0-for-9 from the free-throw line in the second half and missed both shots following Klingel's free throws. Tressa Manwaring scored a game-high 12 points for North, but was saddled with foul trouble along with Ashley Nelson, who had nine points. Tennille Bennett had eight points and Kara Hwang had four as only four North players scored out of nine who saw action on the court. "That's going to make it difficult on any night," Thomas said. "We get kids in foul trouble that can score and that's going to lend to some problems down the stretch and it did tonight." Grants Pass (11-6, 4-3 SOC) created problems for North in the first half, scoring 16 of its 18 points on put-backs. Senior Kaci Williams had 11 points to lead the Cavers, while Alicia Pilcher added eight. The loss dropped North to 2-5 in SOC play, putting the Black Tornado in a precarious position in the race for the playoffs. "We've put ourselves in a situation where we think we've got to win five games to even have a chance at a playoff spot," Thomas said. "In the second half of the season we play five of seven on the road so we've really got our work cut out for us." CRATER 52, EAGLE POINT 41 -- At Central Point, Eagle Point led 23-22 at halftime but couldn't hold on as Crater regrouped in the second half to gain the Southern Oregon Conference victory. With Crater coach David Heard at home with an illness, assistant coach Scott Dippel helped guide the Comets to their sixth win in seven SOC contests. Despite his absence, Heard was credited with his 100th career triumph. Dusty Damon scored a game-high 19 points and Stephanie Lucas added 11 to lead Eagle Point (0-7 SOC), while Sarah Pool had 13 points and 12 assists to pace Crater. Bre Johnson provided a defensive spark in the second half, blocking five shots and limiting Damon to only two field goals over the final two periods. KLAMATH UNION 57, ROSEBURG 42 -- At Klamath Falls, despite having starting center Kate Richards go scoreless, Klamath Union's Annie Kellstrom, Megan Leppert and Sam Gilbert picked up the slack and combined for 38 points in a must-win situation for the Pelicans (9-7, 4-3 SOC). Klamath Union entered the contest tied with Roseburg in the SOC standings and needed the home-court victory to stay in playoff contention. The Pelicans got off to a quick start by going 7-of-11 from the field in the opening quarter and led 34-20 at halftime. Roseburg made a third-quarter run, pulling to within 10 points, but KU answered with a 9-0 spurt. Leppert and Kellstrom each totalled 13 points, while Gilbert added 12 points and five steals. Richards, one of the Pels' leading scorers, was saddled with early foul trouble and never got untracked.
