Is there any truth in that rumor? I live by North and endure hearing the noon-hour "Indy 500" to and from campus. Can you say, "speeding"? And, of course, don’t forget the trail of trash to and from the local convenience store. Back in the day when I went to high school it was a closed campus. It kept the students safe and the streets clean. One can only hope. — V. Handel, Medford The rumor is both true and false. Advertisement Following the lead of South Medford High School, North Medford High School officials do plan to close the campus for freshmen next school year. But upperclassmen may continue to make the lunchtime race off campus. (Sorry to dash your hopes for mid-day peace and quiet.) "Remember ninth-graders don’t drive, or shouldn’t at ages 14 and 15 so this wouldn’t impact Indy hour," said Doug Jantzi, secondary education director at the Medford School District. Why freshmen and not others? School officials are concerned about keeping freshmen on campus. Leaving the grounds at lunchtime is sometimes too much of a temptation to stay away and enjoy a movie during afternoon classes. "The more there is a tie-in to education, the more freshmen can get a foothold on education," said Rick Parsagian, assistant principal at North Medford High School.
