Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend October 9, 2005 Lakeview sweeps St. Mary’s in SCL twin bill St. Mary’s woke up the giant by winning the opening game of the first match in a Southern Cascade League home volleyball doubleheader against No. 5 Lakeview Saturday. The Crusaders handed the Honkers a 25-21 loss in Game 1, but Lakeview came back to win the opener behind 25-18, 25-14, 26-24 scores. In Match 2, Lakeview won three straight, 25-14, 25-14, 25- 11. "Sometimes when you put all your energy and emotion in the first one, it’s tough to bounce back," St. Mary’s coach James Joy said. "In the opening match, offensively and defensively everything was clicking. We were getting perfect passes." Sophomore setter Cynthia Naumes triggered the attack by dishing out 24 assists for the Crusaders. "(Naumes) was very creative with the offense we were running," said Joy. "She did a great job distributing the ball all over the place." Advertisement St. Mary’s outside hitters — junior Melissa Lass and senior Kelsey Reedy — combined for 18 kills and 26 digs. Lass also recorded five aces. "Our focus was to mix things up a little bit offensively," said Joy. "What happened was our outsides got some free swings." In the second match, St. Mary’s (10-9, 2-3 SCL) had a season-low 12 kills and committed 18 unforced errors. "They definitely turned it up a notch in the second match," said Joy. "We couldn’t pass. That kept us out of our system. As a result Lakeview got a lot of free balls from us. They are very good terminating off a free ball." CASCADE CHRISTIAN SWEEPS CHILOQUIN — Melissa Gmur racked-up 17 aces to help Cascade Christian sweep Chiloquin in a Southern Cascade League doubleheader, 25-15, 25-15, 24-26, 25- 12 and 25-20, 25-7, 25-18. Heather Bellamy added eight aces and recorded 10 straight points in the second game of the first match for Cascade Christian (7-5, 5-0 Dist. 6). Sky A League Volleyball PROSPECT 3, TRIAD 0 — At Klamath Falls, Megan Shallenberger was 23-for-24 from the service line with seven aces and added six assists to help Prospect improve to 9-1 overall and 5-1 in Skyline A League play. Lacy Musard added six kills and five aces and Meghan Scriven had three kills for the Cougars, who used solid serving to pin Triad on its heels. Cross Country UMPQUA INVITATIONAL — At Roseburg, Jan Frodsham took third in girls and Paul Rapet was fourth in boys to lead South Medford at the seven-team event. Frodsham had a time of 20:50, seven seconds off her personal best, to help the Panthers to a second-place team finish behind Grants Pass. Lacy Looney of Myrtle Point was the individual winner with a time of 20:12. Lorine Cruz took second for Grants Pass in 20:35. Rapet crossed the finish line in 17:19, while teammate Zach Harris took sixth in 17:39. Oakridge’s Brad Taylor set a course record with a time of 15:48 to win the boys event. Matt Johnson’s fifth-place showing in 17:30 led the Cavemen. Oakridge won the boys team title, while Grants Pass was second, Roseburg third and South Medford fourth. The Panthers took the overall championship — a combined result from boys and girls varsity and junior varsity points. PUMA INVITATIONAL — At Bend, North Medford finished third overall in girls and fourth in boys at the 10-team event. Brittney Dunn paced the Black Tornado girls with a seventh-place time of 18:58.7, while teammates Jade Severson (19:23.6), Statia Smith (20:11.2) and Tanika Woolfolk (20:15.6) also performed well. Aria Hemphill was the top finisher for Ashland with a 15th-place time of 19:42.2. Haley Beal added a 20th-place time of 19:58.6 and Alyssa Taylor was 29th in 20:14.7 for the Grizzlies. Karleigh Gempler of Borah won the event with a time of 18:11. South Eugene won the team title. In boys, Ashland’s Cameron Barleen took ninth with a time of 16:18.3 and Spencer Bonney was 15th in 16:31.9. For North Medford, Rick Nielsen was 16th in 16:35.1, Garrett Frierson was 17th in 16:35.4 and Richard Zhu took 20th with a time of 16:47.6. Borah’s Sawyer Bosch finished first in 15:33.5 to lead his squad to the team title.
