St. Mary's falls in semifinals MONMOUTH - Despite a loss in the semifinals at the Class 2A state tournament, one major hurdle was cleared by the St. Mary's volleyball team on Friday. The Crusaders (21-11) finally found a way to beat nemesis Amity 15-7, 15-10 in the quarterfinals but fell in a semifinal match to Monroe, 13-15, 15-9, 15-12. The Crusaders play Gervais today at 5:30 p.m. in a consolation bracket game. St. Mary's win over Amity was the first in school history after failed attempts in four of the five past state tournaments. In the semifinals, Brittany Lawson gave the Crusaders the win in Game 1 with the final two points from the service line. After a loss in Game 2, St. Mary's jumped out to an 8-3 lead in decisive third game but missed serves let Monore back into the contest. Libby Trum led the way for St. Mary's with 10 kills and 23 digs, while Chrissy Seus added 10 kills and Kathryn Zielony and Kristina Easton pitched in with 15 and 11 digs, respectively. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 15-15, WESTON-McEWEN 6-2 - At Western Oregon University in Monmouth, the Challengers stomped the Tiger Scots in Class 2A consolation play. Kristin Salamone paced Cascade Christian (23-5 overall) with nine kills and four blocks. Whitney Brookins dished a combined 50 assists. Janee Johnson was 15-for-15 passing, served points 2-7 of Game 1 and contributed five digs. The Challengers face Union at 8 a.m. this morning. Class 4A ROSEBURG, ASHLAND ADVANCE IN CONSOLATION - At Portland, Roseburg and Ashland each went 1-1 on the first day of the state tournament at the Chiles Center. The Southern Oregon Conference champion Indians fell to Westview 15-11, 15-3 in a first-round match then rebounded for a 12-15, 15-5, 15-5 victory over Westview. Roseburg faces Churchill at 10:30 a.m. in more consolation action today. Ashland dropped its first game to state powerhouse Gresham 2-15, 8-15 before bouncing back with a 10-15, 15-5, 15-11 win over Hermiston in consolation bracket action. The Grizzlies meet Benson at 10:30 a.m. today in further consolation action. Class 3A HENLEY, LAKEVIEW ADVANCE - At Eugene, Henley and Lakeview each picked up two wins to advance to the semifinals.
