PREP TENNIS Schultz leads North win ASHLAND -- North Medford sophomore Leslie Schultz is making the most of her opportunity for the undefeated Black Tornado girls tennis team. Schultz has been moved into North's No. 1 singles spot the last two matches because regular top seed, freshman sensation Jenny Brown, had other commitments. Schultz won her second consecutive No. 1 singles match Tuesday to help North Medford to a 7-2 victory over Ashland at Hunter Park. North was missing not only Brown, who is participating this week in a large tournament in Washington, but also its No. 1 doubles team of Ali Mostue and Christie Brawner. Regardless, the Black Tornado won its sixth straight Southern Oregon Conference dual and ninth straight overall. Schultz breezed past Loriana Berman, 6-1 and 6-3. "She'll (Schultz) probably play lots more at No. 1 this week," North Medford coach Dale Jensen said. "She needs some good competition to prove that she should be seeded as one of the top players in the conference." Jensen says Schultz, who is undefeated in duals this season, doesn't lack confidence: "She's not afraid to play at No. 1. She's been real consistent. She's not over hitting the ball and doing what she can do real well." Even though one of North's losses came in the top doubles pairing, where Ashland's Chelsea Johnson and Jenny Spears defeated Kelsey Chamberlain and Emily Folsum, Jensen was encouraged with the performance of his players. "Emily and Kelsey are coming together," said Jensen. "They have a good worth ethic. They're trying to get their game ready for district." SINGLES -- Leslie Schultz, NM, d.
