The City Council wants transparency: What are they getting for the $750,000 they give the chamber. The citizens want two-hour (or 90-minute) parking. Why not use the $750,000 to buy parking meters? In the big city, you stick your credit card in the slot, and choose the time you need. Simple. And visitors won't bad-mouth Medford, because it's their fault for not putting enough money in the slot. Simple. Pretty soon, Medford will be known far and wide as a place that is welcoming to visitors. And in my fairy tale, the city fathers follow Mark Dennett's sage counsel and determine what they need and negotiate for it, without throwing (more) money away (see the police/fire station contract debacle). Steve Brown Medford Breidenthal still at it Commissioner Doug Breidenthal, the subject of an Oregon Government Ethics Commission investigation involving failure to report certain expenses and contributions from companies that do business with Jackson County, doesn't seem to get the message. After being "demoted" as chairman, as well as being criticized by fellow commissioners, he is still engaging in behaviors that got him into trouble in the first place. He has missed more than 30 meetings, and spent over $73,000 attending conferences and meetings in his three years in office — yet just last week he missed a critical vote on the minimum wage bill under consideration by the Oregon Legislature because he was away at a conference. Jackson County needs to make certain that Breidenthal does not receive any reimbursements for expenses until the ruling from the Ethics Commission is handed down. The citizens of Jackson County deserve ethical representation from their elected officials, or they should pursue options for their removal from office. Michael Mace Medford No chest thumping If the political offerings you have been hearing on television the last few weeks are making you ill, try to find (and good luck with this) a network that gives a few minutes every now and then to Ohio Gov. John Kasich. No shouting, screaming, interrupting, chest-thumping to attract prime-time exposure. The governor presents his ideas, plans and positions with clarity and dignity. No matter the party affiliation, all candidates should be given more than cage fight exposure. Marjorie O'Harra Phoenix Can't feel sorry Gordon DeVos seems very concerned about the oil producers' plight. I remember when the oil producers were getting over $100 a barrel, not too long ago. They were making billions in profits at the expense of millions of people who had to pay over $4 per gallon of gasoline. Many had to commute to work and spend a good part of their earnings on gas to get to work. I just can't feel sorry for the oil producers. They said it was supply and demand that dictated the price. They control the supply. We started to buy fuel efficient cars and drive less. I have to assume Mr. DeVos must have some oil investments. Let me see — Syria, Libya, Ukraine, Russia, China, Iran, Afghanistan, Iraq — I must have forgotten some. How about Cuba too? Why do you print this deranged warmonger? Steve Soar Medford Nothing new So the leading candidate for the Republican nomination for president of the United States has the enthusiastic support of the nation’s xenophobes, white supremacists, racists and misogynists. What’s new? Paul Falletta Grants Pass Think "Crude and rude." Who does that phrase describe in our current political environment? Before you vote in November, think: Who do you really want to represent us (the American people) on the world stage?
