Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend August 5, 2005 Since you asked Horseback vet is still in Oregon Where is the veteran who left for a cross-country trip by horseback several weeks ago? How are he and his horses doing health-wise? — R.K., Prospect Vietnam veteran Gary Rishforth Sr., who began his horseback trek across the country in Medford on Memorial Day to bring attention to homeless veterans, is still in Oregon. In fact, the former Marine was on a hiatus in Talent on Wednesday to visit friends, stow excess equipment and pick up some necessities. "I’m not as far along as I planned," Rishforth said. "The traveling takes a lot out of the horses. When the horses get tired I stop. When I find water or grazing areas, I stop because I’ve got to take care of the horses." His journey continues next week in Bend, where he left his horses, Roy and Buddy, for his bus trip to Talent. All three are in good health. Advertisement Rishforth, 56, chucked his itinerary early on, stopping in towns where he met homeless veterans. Stops have included Pottsville, Brownsville, Tiller and Sweet Home. Homeless for three years, he wants to boost benefits and services for veterans, especially disabled ones. "A 30 percent disability is $349 per month," he said. "You can’t survive on that, so you’re either homeless or in a shelter or turn to anything you can to survive. It’s just unreal we should be treated like this." Rishforth initially planned to trek 20 to 25 miles a day. Twelve miles per day through mountain and back roads has been his average. So far, he’s covered about 260 miles. His goal is 14,000 miles through 49 states in about four years. Washington and Alaska are next on the list. Send questions to "Since You Asked," Mail Tribune Newsroom, P.O.
