PREP ROUNDUP: Crater cruises in tourney sweep By Staff reports Mar 27, 2019 08:44 PM A A CENTRAL POINT — After surviving a late-inning scare one day earlier, Crater’s baseball team found things far less stressful Wednesday on Day 2 of the Crater Spring Break Tournament at Anhorn Field. The host Comets defeated Wilson 12-2 in six innings and then registered their second victory on the day with a 10-0, five-inning win against Scappoose to improve to 3-0 in the tourney. In Game 1, senior right-hander Blake Hollingsworth (1-0) allowed five hits and struck out three in the six-inning effort. Ike Gilliland, the Comets’ senior catcher, went 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Payton Anhorn chipped in two hits, three RBIs and three runs. Ethan Scott (2-2) pitched a five-inning, two-hitter against Scappoose (1-5), with six strikeouts and one walk. Jacob Memmott hit two doubles and a triple and drove in four runs. The Comet senior first baseman hit a bases-clearing triple with the bags full in the fourth inning. Anhorn collected a pair of hits and Trever Davis was 2-for-3, including his first home run of the season in the first inning. Crater wraps up tournament play at 2 p.m. today against West Salem, which split a doubleheader with Grants Pass on Day 2. LAKERIDGE 7, SOUTH MEDFORD 3: Visiting Lakeridge scored all of its runs in a fifth-inning outburst at U.S. Cellular Community Park to take Game 2 of a three-game series this week. The final game will be played Friday in Lake Oswego. Bennett Thompson went 2-for-4 and Giovanni Bottero was 1-for-3 with one RBI to help lead South Medford (4-3). Zac Ankeny, Payton Owens and Kaleb Barney scored the Panthers’ lone runs. Lakeridge (5-1) scored all seven of its runs with two outs in the fifth behind five hits and one error after starter Blake Shields had limited the Pacers to three hits through the first four innings. WEST SALEM 5-8, GRANTS PASS 0-11: At Grants Pass, Sean Tobin’s two-run single in the ninth inning highlighted a three-run surge by Grants Pass and the Cavemen salvaged a split in a nonleague twin bill that served as part of the Crater Spring Break Tournament. Tobin finished with two hits and four RBIs in the extra-inning nightcap, with Jett Hood and Andrew Eide each posting two hits and one RBI for the Cavemen (6-3). Cade King also had two hits, with Payton Calabro pitching effectively in relief to earn the win. In the opener, West Salem (4-3-1) used solo home runs by Marshall Bray and Crosby Albee and a solid pitching effort by Lucas Stanfield, who struck out seven in 62/3 innings, to topple GP.
