Gary Patrick Hansen, 44, faces a single count of murder in the slaying of 79-year-old Richard E. Clearwater. Prosecutors allege that Hansen killed Clearwater on Thursday. The body was found Sunday in the Rogue River near the 3000 block of Rogue River Highway. Jackson County grand jurors returned the charge — the only one prosecutors presented — after hearing about an hour of testimony, said deputy district attorney Tim Barnack. Three police investigators and one civilian witness testified, he added. Hansen was arrested at his home Sunday, about 10 hours after sheriff’s deputies came to Clearwater’s house at the request of another neighbor to investigate the elderly man’s disappearance. Clearwater’s body was plucked from the river Sunday evening with the aid of boats and ropes, Barnack said. An autopsy was performed Tuesday on Clearwater’s body. However, the cause of death was not released. No date has been set for Hansen’s next appearance in court. He remains in the Jackson County Jail without bail.
