But with a chance to extend its lead to three, Mazama missed a lay-up and Callan Hartzer grabbed the rebound and drove the length of the court. While Hartzer’s shot was just short, Drew Wilkerson was there for the putback at the buzzer, giving Crater a 42-41 win in a season-opener for both teams. "We made some hustle plays that sealed the deal for us," Crater coach Matt Meunier said. "We hustled on the rebound and hustled back down the court." Wilkerson finished with game-highs of 20 points — nearly half of his team’s output — and 12 rebounds. "He dominated the middle and that was a big difference for us," Meunier said. "He got a lot of offensive rebounds and made a lot of putbacks." Mazama tied the game late in the fourth quarter with a pair of 3-pointers by senior post Levi Durighello. The Vikings also did something Crater couldn’t — convert crucial free throws. Advertisement "It was a real good show of character," Meunier said. "We gave away a big lead but didn’t quit." The Comets built a 10-point lead spanning the third and fourth quarters, but watched it evaporate. "We were able to settle down and get some real good looks," Meunier said. "We were hitting easy shots, pounding it in to our big guys. We could have sealed the deal with free throws. We just couldn’t." Wilkerson, a 6-foot-3 post, is one of only two seniors on the Comet roster. "We’re going to need that from him all year," Meunier said. "It was a great start to his senior season."
