Phoenix rolls past Mazama in volleyball KLAMATH FALLS � The Phoenix Pirates jumped on a slow starting Mazama team and hung on for a 15-2, 15-12 Skyline Conference win Tuesday. In Game 1, the Pirates served the ball well and took advantage of Mazama�s miscues. "We came out really sluggish," said Mazama coach Mike Whalen, "and they took advantage." Senior Sutton Jackson went 12-for-12 from the service line and had eight kills to pace the Pirate offense. Phoenix, 8-3 in the Skyline standings, immediately took a 6-1 lead in Game 2. The Vikings fought back, scoring 11 straight points to take a 12-6 lead. The Pirates regained the momentum, scoring six straight points behind the serving of Jackson. Senior Kelly Goodkin served a huge ace to give the Pirates match point at 14-12. Junior April Darby added 10 kills for the Pirates. Senior Jenice Brasser had three kills, and sophomore Megan Britton had four kills to lead Mazama. Mazama fell to 3-8 in Skyline play. ROGUE RIVER 15-13-16, ILLINOIS VALLEY 7-15-14 � At Cave Junction, senior middle Emily Sutherland had 11 kills as Rogue River rallied from a 13-4 deficit in Game 3 to pull out the Skyline Conference victory. Kelly Simmons added seven kills and Katie Glasscock and Kristi Frederick had five each for the Chieftains, who improved to 6-5 in league play. Freshman Kim Hamilton and junior Sydney Derda played well for the Cougars, who fell to 2-9 in Skyline action. HENLEY 15-15, HIDDEN VALLEY 3-3 � At Klamath Falls, Staci Maupin led a balanced Henley attack with four kills as the Hornets rolled to an easy Skyline Conference win. The league-leading Hornets (28-1, 11-0 Skyline) travel to take on second-place Lakeview on Thursday. LAKEVIEW 15-15, NORTH VALLEY 1-5 � At Merlin, sixth-ranked Lakeview jumped up big in both games and cruised to the Skyline Conference win. Junior Nicole Roberts led North Valley with five kills and six digs, but it wasn�t enough as the Knights fell to 4-7 in Skyline action. Jamie Ruda led the Honkers (36-1, 10-1 Skyline) with six kills and seven digs while Frances Hartman added five kills and two blocks. ST. MARY�S 8-15-15, BONANZA 15-3-5 � At Bonanza, second-ranked St. Mary�s shook off the rust from a Game 1 loss to bounce back with a convincing Southern Cascade League victory. Kristina Easton served the Crusaders to a 9-0 lead in Game 2 and finished off the contest with the final two points. In Game 3, Jenny Gritsch boosted St. Mary�s to another 9-0 start and the Crusaders cruised to the win. Gritsch was perfect from the service line at 21-of-21 and also had 14 digs. Melissa Anderson added 17 digs while Kristin Zielony had 16 kills and five digs. Lani Brophy led the Crusaders, who improved to 18-4 overall and 7-0 in SCL play, with 24 assists. CASCADE CHRISTIAN 15-15, LOST RIVER 12-6 � At Lost River, Whitney Brookins had 26 assists to lead Cascade Christian to a Southern Cascade League victory. Krystal Holtz added 11 kills, two aces and two digs while Kristin Salamone tallied seven kills. Kelly Clarke chipped in seven kills to go along with two blocks as the Challengers improved to 15-3 overall and 5-2 in the SCL. BUTTE FALLS 15-15, PROSPECT 1-7 � At Butte Falls, freshman Brianna Smeltz notched six aces, was 15-of-16 at the service line and had eight digs as Butte Falls improved to 8-0 in Skyline A League play and 15-5 overall. In Game 2, Smeltz served seven straight points to wipe out a 2-0 Prospect lead. Then she served the final six points to end the match. Elizabeth McLauchlan had 10 kills in 15 attacks for the Loggers, while setter Jessica Dunlap had 10 assists. Butte Falls ravels to Paisley, also unbeaten in league play, on Friday.
