Panthers register 10-1 rout of Crater Senior forward Tiffany Mason registered a hat trick for the second match in a row as South Medford swept past Crater, 10-1, in Southern Oregon Conference girls soccer play Saturday at Fichtner-Mainwaring Park. Marissa Gillingham, another senior forward, notched her first hat trick of the season as South hit double digits for the first time this fall and improved to 3-0 in conference and 6-3 overall. It took a while for the Panthers to get untracked, but when Mason headed in a cross pass from Erin Reno 24 minutes into the contest it opened the flood gates. "It takes a while or us to find our rhythm," South Medford coach Leslie Lang said. "The ball pretty much stayed on their half of the field and in the second half we had breakaways." Three minutes later, Abby Fowler took an assist from Kacy Clark and booted one home from the top of the penalty box. Crater pulled within 2-1 when Stacy Schmeltzer stole a pass and scored from 12 yards out. Late in the half South doubled its lead when Reno got an assist from Brittany Quinowski and scored in front of the goal. Then Gillingham scored on a free kick from 25 yards to the left. Quinowski scored in the first minute of the second half, followed by Mason's eighth and ninth goals of the fall. Reno's second goal, with an assist from Katie Casebeer, made it 8-1 and then Gillingham tacked on the final two goals. Tuesday's North-South match has been switched to 4 p.m. Wednesday at Fichtner-Mainwaring. ROSEBURG 1, KLAMATH UNION 0 -- At Roseburg, junior midfielder Erin Goodell scored the game's only goal at the 63rd minute as Roseburg (5-2-3, 1-2 SOC) registered its first conference victory . Goodell beat a defender on the end line deep in Klamath Union's zone and connected on a shot from the side from about 5 yards out. Roseburg outshot the Pels, 22-7. Indian goalie Kairi Wheeler recorded the shutout. NORTH MEDFORD 4, ASHLAND 1 -- Tennille Bennett scored a pair of goals as North Medford (6-3, 3-0 SOC) avenged last year's conference loss to Ashland. Bennett scored in the first 90 seconds of the match off a crossing pass from Kelsey Chamberlain. After Ashland tied the game at the eight-minute mark, North recaptured the lead for good on Katie Longan's goal off a corner kick by Jamie MacLauchlan at 25 minutes. In the second half, North added a goal by Denali Tice on an assist from Christine Cameron and Bennett scored off another corner kick by MacLauchlan. North had 19 shots on goal to six for the Grizzlies. Today's Sports Index Mail Tribune Copyright The Mail Tribune 1999, Medford, OR U.S.A.
