By Paris Achen MailTribune.com By Paris Achen Posted Dec. 16, 2010 @ 12:01 am Updated Jan 14, 2011 at 3:44 PM By Paris Achen Posted Dec. 16, 2010 @ 12:01 am Updated Jan 14, 2011 at 3:44 PM » Social News A nonprofit Medford health clinic plans to open a large dental clinic by the end of 2011 in Medford to increase dental care for lower-income families and individuals in Jackson County. (Correction: The timeline for the project has been corrected in this story.) La Clinica Health Care plans to pay for the 18,000-square-foot clinic at 1113 Progress Drive, just east of Biddle Road, with a $3 million federal grant from the U.S. Health Resources Services Administration, $200,000 sought through the federal appropriations process and $1.3 million from a planned fundraising campaign. (Correction: This sentence has been updated to include correct information about the federal appropriations process.) "We are very, very fortunate," said Brenda Johnson, La Clinica's chief executive officer. Johnson said the new clinic will greatly improve the availability of affordable dental care. La Clinica has had waiting lists of up to 3,500 people in need of dental care, she said. "We've worked to cut down that list," she said. "There is a huge need that is quiet but wildly unmet." The health care group has contracted with White City-based S&B James Construction Co. to renovate the building. Construction is expected to begin in February. The site formerly housed Cantwell's Market and then a Castle Megastore, which moved to a site on Riverside Avenue in 2008. When completed, the dental clinic will include 30 rooms, employ 42 people and serve about 7,200 patients per year. La Clinica served about 4,200 patients in 2009 at small dental offices at its health centers in west Medford, Central Point and Phoenix. The new clinic also will function as a practicum site for fourth-year students from Oregon Health and Science University School of Dentistry. According to a release from La Clinica, a state report in 2007 said Jackson County had nearly 13,000 low-income dental patients for each primary care dentist, a ratio three times greater than the level recommended by the federal Health Resources and Services Administration. La Clinica was founded in 1988 to provide medical and dental services to migrant and seasonal workers in Jackson County. Funded by federal grants and other sponsors, its clinics have since expanded to serve anyone in need of care. It charges low-income patients a discounted rate, with deeper discounts for emergency and preventative care. Patients who earn up to 200 percent of the federal poverty level are eligible for discounts. The Phoenix and west Medford dental offices will close when the new clinic opens, leaving the new east Medford site and the existing Central Point clinic at 4940 Hamrick Road to work in concert to address community dental needs. La Clinica officials estimate 85,000 Jackson County residents lack access to affordable dental care because they're uninsured, underinsured and/or don't earn enough to pay for care.
